Not really sure what to say besides ain't that the truth. There are too many artists to name that fall into that category....Tim Easton, Matthew Ryan, Joe Pernice, and most of all, King Richard Buckner, for example, but the list goes on and on. The good news is that they always seem to find a label that will put out their records and venues that will book them. As long as that continues to happen, they will probably squeeze by life doing what they want to do. That is more than most of us can say.
Tim Easton/Rosavelt
I caught Tim Easton & Rosavelt at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, NY last night. They are touring a la Jay & Canyon, with Rosavelt opening, then acting as Easton's back-up band. Tim was brilliant as always and Rosavelt was a pleasant surprise - think Cracker meets The Replacements. They are touring to road test new material that Tim will be recording soon. Hopefully, Rosavelt will back him up in the studio as well. Don't miss these guys if they come your way.
An honorable mention goes to a warm-up act from Rochester, NY called "Old Sweethearts". Young guys heavy on the Old 97's vibe. Very catchy stuff!
Unfortunately, there was only 30 people there. It's a pretty sad commentary that talent like this gets overlooked. I guess if you don't have a video on MTV and/or a "hit single" in heavy rotation on some pathetic incarnation of the Clear Channel, it's an uphill battle to get heard.
