Straightways,

The US release of Palace of Gold was in 2003, so it could be in on a technicality. :)

I like that record pretty well, it didn't sound like I expected it to, with the horns and strings.

Things that I've liked in 2003 (ish):

Jay - Terroir Blues
Drive by Truckers - Decoration Day
Tim Easton - Break your Mothers Heart
Interpol - Turn on the bright lights
Starflyer 59 - Old
Grandaddy - Sumday
Mojave 3 - Spoon and Rafter
Spiritualized - Amazing Grace
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People
Mendoza Line - Lost in Revelry

Guilty pleasures:

Beyonce - Crazy in love (probably shouldn't feel guilty as its a bloody brilliant song)
50 Cent - In da club
Evanescene - that well known one
Justin Timberlake - his entire album
Christina - Dirty

Things that have annoyed me:

Pete Yorn - so forgetable I have forgotten its name.
The White Stripes - are they really that good?
Rolling Stones - but then, they always annoy me.
The NME in the UK creating the 'new rock revolution' and sparking the following crap bands:

The Vines
The Darkness
The Datsuns
The Bellrays

Johnny Cash "Unearthed" is the year's best. No doubt.

so let's agree these lists are foolish, if not downright stupid. they do, on the other hand, serve the innate human need to discriminate, classify, and judge, and therefore coincide with the classic Aristotelian conception of human nature. ok, so they're stupid. here goes anyway.

10. jay farrar, "terroir blues"
9. willard grant conspiracy, "regard the end"
8. dar williams, "the beauty of the rain"
7. belle and sebastion, "dear catastrophe waitress"
6. the innocence mission, "befriended
5. the new pornographers, "electric version"
4. the shins, "chutes too narrow"
3. the eels, "shootenany"
2. tim easton, "break your mother's heart"
1. sun kil moon, "ghosts of the great highway"
