With the money I got for my 12th birthday, I bought Sergeant Pepper's and Abbey Road at Kmart. This was August, 1980, almost exactly 25 years ago. I still remember they were $7.50 a piece.

I never really bought pre-recorded cassettes, and by then, 8-tracks were on the way out. There's a website called "8-Track Heaven" at www.8trackheaven.com that is pretty entertaining. It includes a complete history of the medium. 8-track tapes were designed for cars because early experiments with car turntables worked about as badly as you would expect (I kid you not.) A few years ago, you could still find 8-tracks at any flea market. That may not be the case anymore.

Our first CDs included Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever, Bob Marley's Greatest Hits and Kirsty MacColl's Kite. My wife worked at Record Town in the mall when CDs first started coming in. The first ones were all classical. My first reaction was to CD sound was, "The sound...it's so clean."

First record: Black Sabbath "Paranoid".
First cassette: Eagles "On The Border".
First CD: Neil Young "Freedom".

My actual first record, my mom bought me: Paul Revere And The Raiders "Somethin's Happenin' '68" (I still have it)

Last NEW vinyl (new release) I ever bought, right before everything changed to CD: Keith Richards "Talk Is Cheap".

First tape was "Hendrix In The West." Never got into 8-track, but I still have my reel-to-reel player. Works, too. Somewhere I have a tape loop of me from 1980. I did a cover of "And The Gods Made Love."

The first and only 8-track was Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo.

Don't remember the first vinyl but it was probably Elton or the Eagles. The first CD though was Van Halen I.

My Ding-a-ling, thanks for the memories Postcard7. I forgot about that song. I remember it as a kid. I think it was number one on the Casey Whats-his-name, Top 40 radio show.

First album - Deep Purple's Made in Japan. I still have it.
