I don't know the bands you mentioned (although I've heard of Drag The River), but...if you like teh punk and you like Jay, then don't forget to check out Uncle Tupelo.
You've got a lot of discovery waiting ahead, two more Son Volt albums, 2 1/2 solo albums and 4 Uncle Tupelo discs, plus dozens and dozens of bootlegs. You'll "Drown" in it!!
I couldnt have said it better... Straightaways.. mmmmmmmmmm

First off, I have to say I'm new to Jay Farrar's music and Son Volt and it certainly is a breath of fresh air for me. Before stumbling across Jay's music, I was listenting to punk rock music and bands like Lagwagon, NOFX, Less Than Jake etc. However, I was beginning to get tired of the sound and looking for something new.
I first came across the whole alt-country genre from Drag the River, who is partially made up of a guy from the band Armchair Martian. Anyways, by looking into Drag the River, I kept coming across people who would recommend either Jay Farrar or Son Volt.
To make a long storry short, the moment I heard "Windfall" I was hooked on alt-country and Jay Farrar's music. As he puts it, I like his music because to me it is a "truer sound".
The first 2 cd's that I bought were the retrospective cd, which I thought would be a great way to catch up on some great songs, and "Trace" because of how highly it is talked about.
Ever since buying those 2 I have not stopped listening to him and his bands. I have listened to Son Volt's new album about 3 times all the way through and with all his music that I have found, it gets better everytime.
I recently bought the live album from his solo work and I am hoping he swings around to Indiana or the area with this tour coming up so I can get a chance to see him and Son Volt live.
So basically I just wanted to introduce myself here and say how happy I am that I found a "truer sound". Cheesy....I know....
Glad to see you here. You got into the music through the same avenues I did when I was young. Good to see you.

I think a lot of people, including me, would tell the same story. Welcome aboard.
