Mark, what's the sound like for you guys on stage? Are you getting a full mix straight from monitors, earphones? Does what you hear vary much venue to venue?

Hope you guys had fun in SF (or as Jay called it "your fair city)--noticed you scheduled a day off here. Assume Jay made the pilgrimage to City Lights.

When I saw Son Volt in DC @ 930 Club I was right in front of Jay and his amp. I really only heard Jay's guitar because I was right there. It was great and loud as fuck. I loved it.

The alcove is the area on the sides of the venue underneath the balcony. As for the balcony at GAMH (or other venues with an upper level like Independent), why would anyone think that the sound would be decent up there? Regardless of the sound, nobody can deny that SV played a great show. We've been waiting 4 years for Jay to get the band out on tour again and it was well worth the wait. Hopefully he won't make us wait another 4 years.

Agreed. I like the triangle idea. The sound is usually best near the soundboard, but there were too many chatters in the back, mainly because of the bar. Also, there's always that guy who's way too fucking tall and very unapologetic and has to stand right in front of you after you find that visual and acoustical sweet spot. Can there be a rule for people over 6' to stand at the back side of the triangle?

I sat right behind the soundboard at the show at the Pageant in STL and it might have been the best concert experience of my life.

Ive seen Jay/Son Volt probably 5 or 6 times and the sound has been pretty rough at times...the show with Canyon at Sons of Hermann Hall sounded great imo... other shows it was too loud and muddy

Without fail the worst place to stand at any concert, to hear the whole show mixed well, is at the front of the stage, unless you're there to acquire set lists or see what kind of shoes the band is wearing or REALLY like loud guitars and don't give a shit about the vocals or are cataloging masturbation fantasies. Second worse is usually the back of the hall due to bass-traps and talkers. Get in the triangle, music people! (you can always spot the real music people at a concert, they're never at the front of the stage....always in the triangle)

Not sure if I totally agree with the poor sound quality at GAMH. I stood near the same location as Thasherbear and I thought it sounded fine. Mind you, the GAMH space is narrow compared to most venues, plus it has the alcoves on both sides, so it's not exactly a dream location for any high-quality sound, especially for a full-on rock show.
