When I was a freshman in college, I took spring break at Aunt Helen and Uncle Ben's house in Belmont, NC. I put a roof on their new garage and sang Blood and Fire every night until mono wrecked my life within a week.
I love Amy. She was my first. After, Stevie. And the twins from Seattle. And Joni. And Sandy Denny. And elizaBeth.
I love girls who write songs and sing, and who are THE BEST EVER,

Pony,
Weird. I always assume I'm the only one.
I played that song in a coffee house (weird, I know!) in Houston (Downtown Grounds) when I was 20 I think; back in '89 or whenever that record was released. I played a LOT of folky-girly-coffee guitar back then and sang lots of ya know, torch songs, or whatever. Anyway - Blood and Fire. Favorite. I played it and the hip coffee-drinking art crowd loved it. Of course, nobody knew who the hell Amy was then. I remember being super-pissed that I didn't write that goddamn song. I can play just about every Amy song off the first 4 IG albums, I guess. I was obsessed. She's just such a bad-ass. I wanted to be able to fill in if she ever ditched Emily and needed another guitar player that could sing harmony with all her tunes.
1989. Dang. I fell in love with her INSTANTLY. I saw them play at the old Tower in Houston around then, too. I was positively giddy to get to see her. My friend and I brought her flowers! She was super sweet, and we sat and talked about guitars and "girls with guitars" and about how dreamy Michael Stipe is. I really admire her, still. Pure force. And she can DESTROY a guitar, she's amazing.
