Ban as in ban from the site? That is crazy talk. It's still ok to have a different opinion here. I happen to like the album, but different strokes for different folks still applies.Lord Filthy Von Blumpkin wrote:Bansam6025 wrote:I sounds like Mazzy Star with dudes singing...I'm not overly impressed. The problem with Jay, as a musician, is that he sounds the same in most projects he's involved in post-UT. You can hear the music and be like "That's Son Volt/Farrar/Gob Iron/whatever." Which isn't bad, but it makes this a bit unimpressive.
Kerouac was more about jazz and rhythmic takes on things. This seems unfitting for his words. I'm not really digging on it.
P.S. - I'm not "off" I just stated it seemed lame to me that someone who read the book solely for the project is doing the project. It's fact that I feel this way.
"One Fast Move..." Exclusive first listen 10/13-20

Nah, I'm just a snob when it comes to Kerouac stuff, I guess. This isn't what *I* envisioned when I thought about music to accompany the work. I'm happy so many people enjoy it, it's just not fulfilling to me.megaballs1 wrote:Could be a Rider/Twitcher73 thing going on here as Sam's a good dude.
I would have liked to have seen a jazzier, more rhythmic take on the songs. I think Jay could pull it off, just felt like he doesn't want to leave the comfort zone lately...now if the Guthrie album sounds like Son Volt like this does, I'll be REALLY disappointed in Jay. I figure you should be more experimental and go where the work takes you, not where you can take the work. You know?
I still love Jay with all of my body (including my pee pee).

I’ve been listening to this on NPR site (thanks for the tip) for every second I’ve been online since Tuesday. Kerouac’s words, Jay’s voice, Gibbard’s voice, it doesn’t matter - the arrangement drips of Jay Farrar and has pulled me back in from where I’ve wandered since Canyon backed him. For some reason “Final Horrors” IS the voice with which Jay speaks to me best. And though Gibbard-sung, “Willamine” and “Void” appeal blackly sweet to my oh-so dirty twin baboon souls.

I agree that it's brilliant. I just bought tickets for the NYC show, which I initially wasn't going to attend. As someone Jay's age (42) and immersed in a rather dark period in my life (divorce) the book (which I initially read in my 20's) and the soundtrack really hit home. I haven't read Kerouac in awhile, but took a deep dive in my 20's. Desolation Angels is one of my all-time favorite works.
I commend Jay and Ben for taking on this project...it's fucking brilliant. Have not watched the DVD yet, but am looking forward to it.
This time of year "Autumn across America" is a perfect backdrop for this music. I agree with a former post that a re-immersion in Kerouac for awhile is a very good thing.
