Yeah, I doubt Tweedy would be playing bass if they did reunite. Likely would be John Stiratt. Which brings up an interesting point. Who would be the additional members of a re-united Tupelo? Especially on drums. Would it be sparse Uncle Tupleo or would we see several guys on stage similar to the Anodyne tour. You have to think Brian would appear at some point. I would love to see Max Johnston appear again but he and Tweedy didnt exactly end things on very good terms.
As for Tweedy's bass playing. He held his own quite well in September when they played, It's Just That Simple. But then again, I could probably play that song on bass, and I've never touched a bass guitar.

That sounds like a legit concern to me. Anyone would be rusty after many years of primary bass responsibilities being played by John Stirratt. He apparently said this with a straight face. Found that pretty interesting.
Shit, I used to be able to finger pick, albeit only one pattern, but was still able to pick fluently. Now it's back to the ole' sloppy strumming style.
I did however just purchase some finger picks to try and refamilizarize myself with the technique. I can't believe I ever had this down.
What I really should be practicing however is the art of restraint and Butt out as this entire debate is really none of my BeezWax:-)
Has anyone read the Chuck Klosterman book IV?
In it, Klosterman interviews Tweedy and asks the inevitable question about an Uncle Tupelo reunion. Tweedy responds, "Maybe." And then, when he is asked what would potentially prevent that from happening, Jeff says something along the lines of, "Well, some of the bass parts in those songs are really fast. I don't know if I could play bass that fast anymore."

maybe they don't loath each other. Jay just doesn't converse much. I've heard that Sue called Jay and/or Monica when Jay's dad died, but Jeff didn't(Harp, Rising Son 2005 interview )...the two families know each other pretty well. What do we know?...Heck Brian H would know best, but its their personal lives and he probably wouldn't care to touch it. What if they patched it up a little, but didn't socialize...would we even know?
We might be making it a bigger deal than it is. Jay talks to audiences the way Jeff described most every night..."check you later" was a riot...I don't see the tape as offensive to Jay one bit.

If Jeff is playing it for laughs then I suppose...great (?). (Maybe). The butt of the joke is Jay. If, in this Oprahish way of analyzing someone else's relationship (or lack of)megaballs1 wrote:Come on, Tokyo, how and why ?
Jay has acknowledged meeting Jeff in Mexico on more than one occasion.
Jeff's obviously got a rare talent of talking to crowds...casually, drawing them in as friends and has great timing and sense of humor.
Many of Wilco's crowd know UT...so, this has got to be one of the oddest chance meetings I could dream up. Jay/Monica staying next to Jeff/Sue in Mexico? Its like a candid camera deal...
And he told the hilarious version with multiple laughs, included a Jay impersonation...and delivered in under 4 minutes.
I thought it was great.

I've had my own bizarre relationship, pretty tight, then blindsided -- couldn't believe it could possibly derail the friendship...must have been a one time act (I thought)...and had it happen repeatedly to the point where finally I snapped. Stopped everything cold. Sent an e-mail, cc to his boss "opening an e-mail from you is an act of self-abuse that I will no longer indulge". The loathing was to the point where I couldn't say the guys name for a considerable period of time. (betrayal..whether just perceived or real is always the worst, eh). So you get the idea...but would I go public with this? Of course not. It certainly isn't going to be helpful in re-establishing a relationship that is in a deep hole (wary as hell, eh what!). And while I may think everyone is nodding in sympathetic agreement with me...maybe they aren't..and it just will make it harder to ever talk to that person. Me..I think I'm doing good by being civil and being able to have many many beers with this person in a professional environment with other colleagues around.
Hey, I think that's about the most long-winded I've ever been on this board! Apologies.

Best post in this thread.Tokyo Fan wrote:good post, savtrace. I cannot understand for the life of me why Jeff would even tell that story to a public audience. I sure as hell wouldn't. Some things should be kept private. But I really liked your point about how a reunited UT would simply be playing songs that no longer meant anything to them.

Really, as much as I'd love to see a massive UT, Bottle Rockets, Jayhawks, Whiskeytown super-memory-lane show, everybody's moved on and I like following 'em as they go. On a personal level, I have an old, estranged best friend and understand the weirdness factor. After a while, it's not even about the grudge anymore; it's just too strange. We largely ignored each other at our HS reunion other than exchanging a very Jay-esque conversation: "Hey." "Hey." "How ya been?" "Cool. You?" "Yeah." "Yeah." And yes, I stared at my shoes the whole time.
If everyone was outgoing, it would be a really loud world.
