It is a good movie. But, the critical acclaim is over the top. Ellen Page was great. The best performances were from her parents (JK Simmons and Allison Janney).
The script was very good at times, insulting at other times. And one thing I didn't get is that this character Juno has this really interesting taste in music and she talks about it constantly, and yet the soundtrack in the film is just this crap.
And, ok, I get it. The kid from Arrested Development can play the nerdy character. Jesus, his gimmick is becoming the most tired thing in Film.
If I had seen this flick without hearing a single review, I would not have been so critical. But, according to some reviewers, one may have thought that Juno has saved the film industry.
I still give it a thumbs up, but basically agree with your views. Most of the kid's dialogue was pretty contrived, like someone found a "kids buzzword dictionary" and attempted to use all the hip language. Kids don't really talk like that.
The idea that the script was nominated for an Oscar is a little much for me. And the idea that the director was nominated for an Oscar and Tim Burton was not is just outright ridiculous. I mean I really don't care about awards for art, but if we are going to give them out, let's be realistic, Juno was really good, thanks to some strong acting, but it wasn't THAT good.
I think that type of kid would like the soundtrack still, my daughter is 16 and likes VU, among MANY other things and still likes the Juno soundtrack.
Overall it was good, 7 out of 10, but not at all on the par of No Country, There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, Michael Clayton and some other great films from '07.
Of course it's all completely subjective when it comes right down to it.
