If Tony and Sharon could work it out (all the Mr. Songwriters, too), I bet the best Midnight Ramblin' would be Levon playing drums on every single Uncle Tupelo song in order (wouldn't that be weird?), patterned out so Levon could bust some harmonizing in line with how it all should be and work out in the meantime (like Gillian singing/seeing White Rabbit, you know, the one?
Now, Gil's singing Orphan Girl ...
PS> Grammy Boy: listening to a Brian Henneman 1991 Bottle Rocket Demo right now with Jay and Jeff providing back-up...so they say.....love Wave That Flag
i agree, brian ... just didn't care for this performance ... too slick
would love to one day attend one of his midnight ramble's
my kind of thing
i saw levon with the RCO all-stars at carnegie hall in i think 1978 at one of the old WNEW christmas concerts ... with rundgren and the mark almond band
Levon Helm is in very near the top of my list of "favorite characters" in the history of rock and roll.
The one guy I'd most like to have the persona of, but, never will.
I love "Dirt Farmer".
Makes me look forward to bein' an old man, as opposed to fearing it.
It's amazing how well he still sings, considering what he's been through.
He's got more voice left than Dylan.
Levon is, always has been, and, always will be "The Shit"...
Brian
dprice -- i was at that ryman show too. i'll never forget perusing the crowd when they broke into "Rag Mama Rag"... i think everyone in the place was on their feet, cutting a rug.
it was my first time at the venue. yup, it's one of my top 5 shows of all time too...
Dirt Farmer is incredible. I saw Levon at the Ryman this past summer and it was one of the top five concerts I've ever seen, his country funk backbeat cannot be effed with. When he busted into Ophelia the place went nuts! Buy this album (please don't burn) because he needs the money, from what I understand his cancer almost bankrupted him and he nearly lost his barn studio to the bank.
i will go out on the proverbial limb and declare, without dylan and the band, there would be no jay farrar and jf message board. yes, brothers and sisters, they were and are that influential.
can you hear that singing? sounds like gold.
maybe I can hear poor richard from the grave
singin' where to reap and when to sow
when you've found another home you have to leave.
I can't believe Rick Danko passed away in 199 F-ing 9
Blatant Rock N' Roll ignorance..
I'm sorry Rick Danko..
Please Rest in Peace and Thank You (and the rest of The Band) for The Last Waltz! You were responsible in part for providing me and my wide eyed school girl chums a little break from our heavy rotation of Siouxsie and the Banshees/ Echo and the Bunnymen videos, when sitting in my childhood bedroom glued to the TV while watching a copy of The Last Waltz that my dad had rented from the neighborhood video store. Pretty soon we were the proud owners of our very own copy and viewing The Last Waltz, became a frequent Saturday night ritual which prepared our young Rock N' Roll ears to mature and expand from beyond the 80's Brit Pop of which we were so fond..
God Bless!
