I'm really sick of all the comparisons between Jeff and Jay. As someone stated before, even in Uncle Tupelo it was a yin & yang kind of effect. Today they're completely separate from each other and, as far as I'm concerned, that's perfectly fine.
My love for Wilco or Uncle Tupelo or Jay Farrar has no bearing on my love for any of the other bands on that list.
Sure, I still think Wilco is better than any other band right now. 10 years ago, Jay and Son Volt were at the top of that list. But the fact that they were formerly tied together really has no bearing on my preference.
In fact, thanks to 93XRT in Chicago, my father and I learned about SV and Wilco separately. My dad had purchased Trace and Straightaways, Being There and Summerteeth. Back in '98-'99, I was WAY more partial to Son Volt and I saw them live several times in those few years when WST came out. I thought the live show was good although Jay never seemed all that in to it. They were still my favorite band.
It all changed when I saw Wilco for free outside the Tribune Tower in Chicago in 2000. I was blown away by everything about the show. Even the songs I didn't know I like a lot.
Now, I don't really know where SV and Jay fall on my long list of artists I like. I know it's not top 10, but he's still and artist where I have no reservations about buying his next release because I'm sure I'll find something to like about it.
And I like The Search more than anything Jay's done since Straightaways. This release was a long time coming.

fen, i would tend to agree with you about jeff's obsession with hats. however, i must take issue with your position concerning jay's focus on obscure geographic landmarks. i find his references to locales such as sebastopol, st. genevieve, and williamsburg to be refreshingly creative. however, i do have one question that needs to be answered. is he referring to barstow, california or barstow, texas? when reviewing a map there is a good argument that once you are are halfway to either location you are halfway to hell.
It's hard to hate Wilco's music, but real easy to hate the hype around the band.
We're never gonna hear the end of the Farrar/Tweedy saga, that's just how it is I guess. Personally I think Jeff should be a lil less self-conscious about his hats, and Jay a lil more focused on other places than Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

I think that Jay should have publicized it. It is music news, therefore it is a story. A brilliant artist like Jay being told "No" regarding a brilliant album? That is newsworthy.gdavis5446 wrote:Wilco obviosly has a great press manager. Their releases often coincide with a documentary or book release. What kind of press did he Search get? Nada. Nothing. Not a damn thing outside of a couple of reviews. No Depression didn't even do a cover.
Meanwhile, Tweedy is on the cover of Guitar World accoustic, and many bigger name mags have done something about Wilco.
Maybe if Jay went to rehab or hit on Tweedy's wife/girlfriend (I don't know which he has, if any), he would get more press.
Maybe Jay should do a video about SV, and the interviewer could make Jeff think he's doing an interview about alt country when in fact, he is only helping to promote the new SV album.
This is way cynical, and I apologize for that. I just wish Jay cared enough about his career to promote himself a little bit.
I mention the story about Wilco’s album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, being rejected by its major label after it was made.
“They refused to put out my first solo album (’Sebastopol’) as well, during that same shakeup at Warner Brothers,” Farrar mutters. “I just didn’t make a story out of it.” You mean, I say, you didn’t put out a press release. “Right. Evidently I should have.”
LOL. You've gone all the way back to the root of the matter. But if you somehow manage to ignore the seeding and rooting process, Doug may be onto something. Jeff Tweedy would in the same love/hate category as, say, Ryan Adams.farrarfan1 wrote:If Jeff Tweedy hadn't been in UT this thread wouldn't exist.
