She's dreamy........
This might give you a hint to her popularity

There is something about a cute girl with a guitar that makes all the nerdy rock boys swoon. (See also 3 pages of B-day shout outs to Dev)
I actually like You are Free but The Greatest certainly isn't.

Re: Cat Power
Chicago Sun-Times rock critic Jim DeRogatis theorized that critics find her sexy and thus give her good reviews. This is as good an explanation as I can think of. Throw in the "tortured artist" thing that she seems to cultivate and there you have it.calexico wrote:What is all the excitement about? It's one paced and has a tendency to send me to sleep. She reminds me of Beth Orton, a lovely voice but a storm in a teacup otherwise.
As for the cited album, the Memphis sound - can't think of the names of the players - is the only excitement in what is otherwise a boring and, as you astutely observed, repetitive song cycle.
Both he and Trib critic Greg Kot panned it, if my memory is correct. I bought it and want my money back, for whatever that's worth.

I like You are Free better than the Greatest. But she is a good poet. Just getting out of rehab and all has some affect on her work I'm sure. It's just where she's at right now. It has some good moments, which is consistent with most of her work; a few good moments.
Names off You Are Free is an execptional piece of work, as is He-War.
Give it time to grow on you.
