Yeah it`s a great collection;lots of covers(the Magnetic Fields cover(100 000 Fireflies)just ROCKS! when Mac sings that part 'when I turn up the tone of my electric guitar' the band just kicks into high gear )
My favorite is Tossing Seeds with No Pocky and On The Mouth after that.
I really like Superchunk, despite my Alt-C leanings the past 7-8 years. have to say that before that Superchunk , Pavement and The Afghan Whigs were 3 of my favorite bands, although I probably have more than most folks in that dept. Will always have a spot in my heart for Superchunk, they are simply lovable in terms of melody, misicianship, the fact they started there own label against all odds and they have a chick playing base and shes good. They REALLY matured toward the late 90's which was cool cause I was getting on in years and they put out these great albums that were more adult type listening.
Pavement were equally loveable but damn they were sloppy but that to me was part of there charm. Some of the greatest sprawling records of the 90's. Afghan Whigs should have been superstars of Alternative nation but got passed on for whatever reason, couple of briliant albums in "Gentleman" and "1965"
Built to Spill is a killer band.
I live in Ottawa , Canada and it kills me that all the great Western-Midwestern bands rarely come east of Philly and if they do its 7- 8 hours drive for me. Are you listening DBT, Calexico, Mr. Farrar and Doug Martsh .
Wilco is cool they always play here or in Montreal always in the spring.
great record. lots of good singles compiled. i loved the chunk back then, and still do to this day. great albums, great live show. foolish is still my favorite. don't know why. i think come pick me up was pretty great too. this is second though.
This is one of those bands where I just didn't get it..sorry. 90's indie rock, all well and good....Pavement,Afghan Whigs,Sonic Youth....just never got fired about the Chunk.
Went to my local record store yesterday and picked up this great Superchunk compilation used for 6.99. (Got the new Built to Spill too.) What a fantastic record, man. It's a compilation of singles, rarities, etc. It probably helps that it coincides with a significant period in the development of my musical taste (college), but I just think this band was great, and while I kinda dig their more recent stuff, this early period is where it's at for me.
Discuss amongst yourself, twitcher. (and anyone else who digs the Chunk)
BTW, it should be noted that this isn't to be read as a blanket endorsement for roots rockers: just because you like the Volt, you won't necessarily want to seek yourself out some Superchunk. But if you got a little '90s indie rocker in you, then by all means.....
