What are your SO's listening to?
My so was listening to the worst crap you could imagine. We're talking Celine Dion. Took her to Jay w/ Canyon, Prospect Park Brooklyn in July of '04 (maybe August). She actually wanted to come to the wxpn festival featuring Son Volt this summer and if she's in town, she'll come to Son Volt @ the Troc in center city Philly next week. She's even starting to like Lucinda and The Mavericks. We still have a lot of work to do, but it's a start.
My other half prefers talk radio. And I'm not even talking sports talk radio. But I can usually get him to listen to my selections if we're in the car or just hanging out at home. A few CD's from his very diverse personal collection: Puddle of Mudd, Frank Sinatra, Sarah McLachlan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Garth Brooks.

I'll stand by ya up on this, cal.calexico wrote:Not liking the hate for Joy Division here!!![]()
Seems that a lot of people..guys??.. are hating teh Tori Amos too. I quite like her stuff and I think From A Choirgirl Hotel is an amazing album.
Joy Division was jagged horror and brilliant tragedy.
And they were NOT goth in any stylistic sense or look.
If anything, they may have foreshadowed goth or they were more "goth" in their brief time than The Cure ever were in all their 20 some odd years (and i do love me some Cure).
- any 16 Horesepower fans out there? You should've seen 16hp cover JD's "Day of the Lords" and "24 Hours".

Meanwhile, I also like Tori's delerious and delightful music.
I think guys are generally turned off by her melodramatic (not in bad way either) singing style...but maybe they're also intimidated by her bold songwriting.
From a Choirgirl Hotel and Boys For Pele are my favorites. I haven't really kept up with her more recent ablums in the last few years.
SO: Meshuggah, Dillinger (sp?) Escape Plan, The Mars Volta, Willie Nelson, Tool, Coldplay, Radiohead, Helmet, Clutch, Faith No More ...
We agree on most things, including Tori. We don't agree on Bee Gees or most Disco (which I love), but he can appreciate all the alt-country stuff and listens to Flying Burrito Bros., Son Volt, Tupelo, Jay. He's not into Wilco at all, but liked their show quite a bit. We mostly agree about 95% of the time, with subtle differences - his taste has more of a hard-rock flavor. We obviously agree on Maiden.

Mine likes pretty much the same stuff I do--we lean more toward 'indie' stuff--but she has a bit of an aversion to teh twang. She wasn't a fan of Jay at first because of it, but she's coming around; she liked Okemah a bit and says Trace is growing on her. She likes The Drams too, and already had some Ryan Adams, DBTs, and Wilco. Other than that: Death Cab for Cutie, White Stripes, Interpol, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, MMJ, New Pornographers, Spoon, MBV, Jeff Buckley, a ton of Tori Amos (I'm not a fan) etc., some of which I've turned her on to. Plus a ton of other classic rock and '90s/'00s modern rock stuff. She's a big fan of Blender mag, to my chagrin
, but has pretty good taste in music overall.

My wife has bad taste in music. She loves 80s hair metal, early 80s "goth" music like Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, etc. She also LOVES anything on CMT for the most part. Because of her, I knew 5 of the 8 songs Sara Evans played when we covered her show. Damn near divorce worthy!

That's why i drink bourbon in the winter.
Nonetheless, no significant other here either, but at least my old girlfriends had similar or different but still good taste in music.

Wait, that was a really personal paragraph. Maybe I just thought it and didn't actually type it. No I typed it.
Anyway the most important significant other I ever had, my daughter's mother and late wife, had VERY similar tastes in music. About the only thing we DIDN'T argue about was music.
Since then I have never found another woman who I enjoyed being with who's tastes in music didn't suck.
