Tarrytown Show
The What Goes On encore at this show was an insane jam--I've never seen the band work harder as they did their best Who Live at Leeds impression. Mark Patterson maniacally pounding away and Duplantis wailing on his bass and finishing by slamming the bass onto the top of the amp stack. Simply incredible.
Tarrytown Show
Another great show last night. I had seen the second show of the tour in Dallas, and although that was great, in comparison this show was better. Some songs seemed to be a bit extended and everyone seemed to be much more comfortable with the new material and playing together.
Two fewer songs than Dallas - Promise the World and Graveyard Shift were dropped. Not too surprising, as I think it was the fourth show in four days plus the CBS taping.
The roadie / guitar tech seemed to break a string when tuning one of the Gretsches between songs and it seemed to cause some confusion. Jay mentioned that "a string just broke on a 1962 instrument," which would imply that at least one of the Gretsches is a vintage guitar. I had assumed both were reissues. He changed the tuning on the brown Tele he's been using and was off to the next song after introducing the band.
I hope this show was recorded - the sound was amazing and the security nonexistent.
After seeing the Happy rehearsal video and hearing that it had been played a couple of times recently, I was a bit disappointed when they went into What Goes On (after the house lights accidentally came on and then were turned off again). However, it was a great, extended jam with even as much of a drum solo as you'll ever see at a Son Volt show, and it actually got by far the biggest applause of the night.
If I could see another show on this tour, I would. If you can get to one, go!
