This is a really TIRED subject, and just a ridiculous thing to try and discuss, which i think I have said many times before.
It is like the Pro Wrestling mentality. Put Jay and Jeff in a ring and see who comes out alive!!!!
It is not like that. Art and music is not something you can discuss in that manner. There is personal preference and emotion and mood and style. Some days in some moods Summerteeth is the only sound I want to hear. Other days all I want is Straightaways.
Who is better, who is worse. stupid subject.
Now if it was who is better, Jay or Hoobastank. The answer would be obvious.

Amen , it is getting stale. I love both for what they are , great musicians . This is the last thing we need in our open minded , independent scene , anamosity for fellow artist .travelinsong wrote:considering this is a Jay Farrar website I would think the discussions would stay on the subject more. But noooooooooooo....... we get more on Wilco/Jeff and how no one should have their own opinion.countryBoy wrote:These Jay vs Jeff threads are lame, who ever starts these must still be in jr. high. Opinions especially musical opinions are very individual and this crap is starting to be even more stupid than the Beatles and Stones arguments that seem to never stop as well.
I came here to hear more about Jay and not his buddies from a long time ago. UT was great, but we must move on.

I have really enjoyed Jay's work a lot more than I have Jeff's.
Jay has more depth in his style of play and lyric.
everything has been cool!
while Jeff has a huge tendancy to sound scripted and puppeteered.
even if it's his own hell.
I voted for Jay - all albums with his design on it come out in flying colors.
while given the time I had to give Wilco a fighting chance and they failed miserably. Summerteeth made me want to puke. YHF left me hangin'.
I don't even want to hear the new stuff.
Jay blows away Jeff in any setting.
sure Jeff has a few songs up his sleeve,
but Jay is more consistent throughout and to me that carries a lot further than 1 good song on an album. at least with Jay's stuff I get a full disc of quality on all of his releases.
I don't hate Wilco or Jeff I just think they play a way that doesn't suit me.
someone recently sent me the recordings of Jeff solo at the vic and man does he suck even worse by himself or what! no wonder the rest of the band came in to help, but even they couldn't do enough to save the show.

First off, you can't compare art like you compare automobiles or socks at Wal-Mart.
I listen to A LOT of music, of a LOT of varieties. There is no one I listen to more than Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, in all of their various incarnations.
Summerteeth is one of the best albums ever made, and once I bought it it never left the CD player of my truck. It is my favorite Wilco album though they are all masterpieces, including A Ghost is Born.
As with Wilco, Jay Farrar's work continues to blow my mind. I can't find a bad note or a bad sound in anything of his I have ever heard. ON a road trip last evening I listened to Sebastopol all the way and realized once again how incredible an album it is, from start to finish. He hasn't lost a step from Trace or Straightaways or WST or anything UT ever did. This is just as wonderful and relevant as anything he has ever done, as is Terroir Blues.
I guess my point is, it is ludicrous to think I can choose between Wilco or Son Volt or Jay or Jeff or whatever, cause both make incredible music and write incredible songs and continue to blow my mind, more than any other artists out there.
They are both incredibly vital to the music of the last 15-20 years.

I think Farrar is definitely more consistently better, but I love "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" so much that it seems like Tweedy's best is every bit as good as Farrar's best. I really love both of their careers, from beginning to end. I have to credit Wilco for getting me interesting in UT and, in turn, Farrar anyway. Summer Teeth is one of a handful of albums that defined me musically, as well as the Finn Brothers album and Rubber Soul (so it's understandable why I hold Wilco in such high regard)
That seems reasonable, but I can't listen to Summerteeth, I haven't listen to that in years. Maybe I should try to listen to it again. It is Jay's writing that has been lost with Jeff, he is ok but I believe Jay was a better songwriter.clarkma5 wrote:I'm gonna be honest and say that I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Summer Teeth are two of the best albums ever made, so I gave Wilco the nod. Farrar is right up at the top, though, especially with his solo works, and unlike Wilco (who I feel peaked on YHF), Farrar seems to just be getting better.
F____ Wilco!
I don't even bother listening to them anymore. I will listen to Jeff by himself, or loose fur and Uncle Tupelo, anyone want to buy their cd's? I have A Ghost is Born, Yankee, Summerteeth, Being There, Chelsea Walls, and a Lounge Axe Show from Chicago (Just Jeff) - I'm not selling that.
I vote for Jay and his band, but an Uncle Tupelo reunion would be great.
