I think the song "wherever" on the Anodyne reissue may be one of Tweedy's best ever. So incredible. The first time I heard it I almost cried, seriously.

Don't feel bad travelinsong, I too missed these guys in the early 90s. I remember seeing Guns-n-Roses and Metallica and other bands back then. While they are great bands, I can't believe I missed something even better, and so intimate and personal and beautiful. The weirdest thing is, growing up, especially in the late 70s early 80s, my biggest influences were punk and my dad's classic country, but I never found Tupelo until the mid 90s, after I got into the Jayhawks, then tried to discover everyone else in the "alt-country" genre.

Enough with the Jeff vs Jay

Post by sotampacane »

Buy Jay's stuff because its amazing material. But please, there is no reason to build up Jay at the expense of Jeff. They are both amazing artists and if you don't like Wilco that's fine, but these two don't bash each other so there isn't any reason for the fans to do it.

Trace is amazing. It's brilliant from start to finish. Straightaways is good, but nowhere close to Trace.

Anodyne is one of the greatest albums of all time. Buy the reissue rather than the original because the first two bonus tracks are absolutely stellar.

thanks for the information!

I have picked up 'Trace" and it is another perfect collection of nicely articulated songs - a must have! I did see on Amazon where it was supposedly the best out of all the solo Jay and Son Volt. Is it really that great that no other Jay album could do better? I found SS&BT to be a step above that. Of course as a live album I guess it can't really be ranked with a studio project. I can't get Windfall and Tear Stained eye out of my head!

I have been a little worried about getting the "Anodyne" album because I am afraid it may sound too much like a WIlco album. I heard Wilco before Jay and found Wilco's sound silly after hearing Jay's work as well as Uncle Tupelo. Since Jay won't comment then I will say it - Wilco sucks!
Jay Farrar sounds 10 times better live. Jeff doesn't have the cool voice Jay has, although I have heard a few live Wilco songs that I thought were very well done. as an overall view - Wilco needs something, but I can't put a finger on it. probably Jay's input?

I have now gotten all the Uncle Tupelo albums minus Anodyne.
there's no doubt I will get it now since Jay is more prominent on it than I thought. I have heard a few songs from it on the greatest hits release. To me they didnt seem as impressive as the first 3 UT albums, which by the way, blew me away. How I missed all that during the 90's I'll never know.
could it be I never listened to the radio?
nobody I knew ever mentioned them.
they were all heavy metal butt heads
I was always into the classic rock and even more classic country.
I was a loner when listening to Neil Young, but got everyone I knew into him as we went along. After that NY was the main play at all the parties.
It was almost as if I opened a new view for them to get on and enjoy the ride. it was also right after that NY became popular again all over the world during or right before the Harvest Moon release. Too bad I never introduced them to another distant underrated musician named J.J. Cale who has recently picked up new recruits himself after playing with a few jam bands.
Once you find out who the mastermind is behind some of the biggest classic rock hits - you go there.
it is sorta how I ended up here

I have ordered all the Jay and Son Volt albums!
Terrior Blues
Straightaways
3rdShiftGrottoSlack
Wide Swing Tremelo
sebastopool

I did order them from Amazon since they were appx. 5.00 or more cheaper than anywhere else I have seen them. minus the EP which is the same price everywhere

Jay was a slow acting virus for me.. then it took hold.

Give these a listen.. Infact all the Son Volt is cheap at amazon you can get all three for like 31 bucks. Slam the cash on the counter...

Straightways
Trace
Anodyne (even the Jeff stuff is good!)
Terrior Blues (skip the Space junk)

I hate to say it but i really havent listen to SS&BL much with all the Bootlegs ive been listening to. Need to queue it up!

1. Trace - Son Volt's first album - a true classic. The 1st 6 tracks are incredible
2. Straightaways -Son Volt's 2nd - truly underrated
3. No Depression/Anodyne (take your pick) - Uncle Tupelo - both of these are heavy on the Farrar songs - I do not care for Tweedy stuff (sorry)
4. 3rdShiftGrottoSlack/Jay Farrar Live EP great songs on the 1st EP and the 2nd one just to listen to Punch Drunk over and over (plus you get the only instance of Jay's onstage banter known to man before California)
5. Wide Swing Tremelo - Son Volt's Swan Song... great as well... Sorry but I can not include Wilco stuff here... Not my cup of tea..

I love to see a new recruit. Once Jay is in the blood it's like a virus.

New Jay Farrar Stone Steel Bright Lights gets 5 stars!

Post by travelinsong »

as an un-biased reviewer of the new live Jay
I feel obliged to comment
Stone Steel Bright Lights is excellent!
I picked this up as soon as it came out and never really hearing Jay solo before I was amazed. Jay sounds great live!

The entire album is flawless!
I can't find a bad song on it!
everytime I listen to it - I hear another song I want to hear again.
the first songs to stick were
"Doesn't Have To Be This Way"
"Damn Shame"
"All Of Your Might"
"Voodoo Candle"

then came
"Greenwich Time"
"6 String Belief"
"Make It Alright"
"No Rolling Back"
"Heart On The Ground"
"Cahokian"

where does it stop?
I am still digesting the excellence of this album
so please don't scold me on any tracks not listed - they are all great!

After over 20 listens to this fine cd I came to the conclusion that I must buy all other albums available from this musician.
If you haven't already gotten this then you are missing out

the question now is which album should I get next?
I heard "Trace" was pretty good.
any suggestions?

now on with the show............we're gone........
