This varies constantly for me. the main constants are
Jay, SV, UT, Wilco, Jayhawks, Clash, Ramones, Bowie
been digging My Morning Jacket's At Dawn, Richard Buckner, The Mars Volta, At the Drive In, RATM, Radiohead, RHCP, Shuggie Otis, Spirit,

So much much more. I usually experience a severe musical overload daily.

I like to buy music all the time, so usually my favorites are what I have just gotten...but as for indellible, life-long impressions, I am afraid the list is kind of long. Here goes:
Hank...just for being Hank
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys- I collect this (and all western swing) to a mania
Lefty Frizzell for the voice
Hank Snow for the picking
Wayne Hancock- four of the best records I own
The Ramones (RIP)
Uncle Tupelo/ Son Volt- I don't need to explain this one
The Pogues for when I am drunk (Flogging Molly for drunk and pissed off)
Janis Martin-who named my best friend (my dog)
T-Rex...I don't know why, it's just that way-don't tell anyone
The Stiff Little Fingers for lending purpose to puberty (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Toots and the Maytals for the best shows I've ever seen...15 years apart
Desmond Dekker for always making my wife smile
Oh yeah- and thank god Steve Earle is still alive
shoot- I made it out under twenty, I done good

For 'bands', I would have to say MMJ, even though it is really just Jim that does the dirty work (writing, singing, choreographing, interior designing).

I would say Calexico and Wilco also (even though they are on my shit list at the moment).

Both great bands. Check them out at http://hellshalfacreonline.com
