AM - A great start - but as it turns out, much better stuff was to follow.
Being There - Probably the best. If it had been cut down to one CD, maybe the 12 best songs... would have clearly been the best.
Summerteeth - Kind of a transition-type album. The weakest, I think, but still better than 75% of the music out at the time.
YHF - Awesome and and I go back and forth between this and BT as my favorite. Even though I think BT is #1, I still listen to this more than any other.
AGIB - Slowly grew on me. I didn't give up after first few dissapointing listens and eventually realized how good it was after seeing them perform the songs live, and going back to re-listen with different ears.

Mermaids - never got into them for some reason, although CA Stars is swwweeeeet.

My Wilco Fan-ness.

By the way Son Volt:
Okemah, then Trace, then WST, then Straightaways. In a very close race.

I guess I'm somewhere between A and B. I'm only a Twanger in that Being There remains my favorite album. For me it breaks down like this:

1) Being There
2) YHF
3) Summerteeth
4) AM
5) A Ghost Is Born (I do like this album a lot though; it's cliche by now but the songs really come to life played live)

You can tell on AM and Being There the potential the band has, and that with each album the songs, the musicianship everything just got better and better (until a Ghost is Born, which I think misfired to an extent). YHF is the culmination of all those years of work, and is just about a perfect album. Summerteeth is brilliant to me in the way it uses happy pop songs to present such dark lyrics. Both are great!!

Ha! Ha! Ha!
Well...I like the first track!
The thing is, to me, it sounds like Jeff wanted Summerteeth to sound like Pet Sounds and Revolver or something like that, but instead it ended up sounding like f*cking ELO or something! I've never managed to listen to Summerteeth all the way through in one sitting: by the halfway point it makes me want to run down the local High Street stabbing people in the neck with a rusty chisel!
But, then, what do I know? I don't particularly like Pet Sounds, Smile, Revolver or Sgt. Pepper. And I can't stand Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker album, but I adore Love Is Hell...maybe I'm a freak?
Anyway, glad to be of fascination to you! :D

About my faves or about Nels?

I really dig Nels style and think he has added a lot to Wilco. They are just amazng live, I will be catching 3 shows in Sept. Whoo Hoo. (and 2 SV shows as well). I cant wait to hear Nels on a studio album with the band.

i was in the middle down front, i waited in line to get good upfront seats...i am small but have very sharp elbows!

i really don't recall the opening band so i am thinking that they didn't impress me all that much.

i do remember 3 guitars and lots of jamming though for wilco and my ears were buzzing for days.

I love AM too. Simple straighforward substance beats conceptual sonic sculpting any day of the week. I think AM is full of feeling too, not at all lacking depth. Tweedys songs are strongest when simplest.

Yep; I love AM as well. None of the detractors seem to realize that it was a product of circumstances. I like it for what it is.

ulsaint wrote:Why does AM get so little respect? I know it's much different than the other Wilco albums and maybe not as deep, but I think it's great. It's not timeless maybe in the way Trace is, but as far as fun, sing-a-long songs, AM rules.

If I'm driving and just want a fun album to listen to, AM is perfect. The lyrics aren't that deep, but personally, sometimes I think that's a nice change of pace. Not every song has to be so cryptic or meaningful.

Songs like "I Must Be High," "Box Full of Letters" and "Passenger Side" etc are pretty straight forward, but can anyone really say they aren't brilliant in their own pop alt country way?

IMO AM is almost more like an Old 97s album. Great catchy tunes with excellent musicianship and fun lyrics.

I think Neverwonagrammy gets jobbed by the Wilco snobs that bash that album. The guitar on AM slays. It's great. I like all Wilco albums although I'm not a huge fan of AGIB yet, although I'm sure it will grow on me.

I feel as though because AM was rushed that somehow it's just perceived as being inferior to other albums, which imo, is bogus. It's a discredit to Koomer, Brian, Max and John.

I like Summerteeth and Being There, but I really feel neither is that superior, if superior at all, to AM.
Don't get me wrong i adore AM - great album!
