I'm not even thinking about it and I don't give a damn.

That's a lie.

Nice words Chris.

The scene was like I thought college might have been but wasn't. It was a younger crowd, maybe 30-ish, all there to take in bare boned music backed by solid, thoughtful prose.

I see strains of outrageous talent in a guy like John Roderick, to me an unknown, can't be paid much...reminds me how I howl at the moon for all the talented but underpaid musicians I've met or befriended over the years.

The crowd seems to know this guy and his tunes. The place has a Seattle feel to it. Could it be that Seattle has a cool folky music scene that I'm missing? I think I'm missing alot of scenes...maybe thats what is happening...a series of scenes in places like Austin, Portland and Brooklyn. Maybe each generation has to create its own soundtrack and support artists in their time...I think its good, I hate the radio fed trapped in time nature of "classic rock".

It reminds me I'm getting older too.

Watching Jay and Ben master these complex lyrics with rhythmic cadences, something I've always watched Dylan do in wonder lately...it separates them from the mortals. Not a single line was flubbed here on opening night. All these crazy Jack lyrics. Try singing all those lyrics to Idiot Wind sometime.

I will never tire of having Jay singing great lyrics like Low Life Kingdom with eyes mostly closed. He feels it, you think. Did Townes feel it too.

God, I miss him but never knew.

Thats why I see Jay and his projects every chance I can. Its not to support him. Its to indulge me.
sigh.

Keep talking Mega, I couldnt listen to you all day long.

I actually did check flights and if not for a scheduled trip to Reno in a couple weeks and then likely back out to SF around Xmas I would be at Bimbos tomorrow night.

God Damn you lucky bastard...Dodger fans dont deserve this kind of luxury.

Antelope and myself will be at the NYC show.
I think Grifter is making an appearance as well. Come to NY Dev.

I like the Voodoo Candle rockin' addition to close the show. Also cool because Jon Wurster played on that (the mellower version) on Sebastopol.

this dude opened

John Roderick

Just him and acoustic guitar. Great voice. Original music. Very likable fellow from Seattle, alternate tunings with great interaction with the audience. Ben Gibbard said they couldn't decide on a comedian or a musician to open the tour, so they got both.

Couches in Alleys
is 2004 Nothing's Lost, the breakthrough and fourth album for artist Styrofoam aka Arne Van Petegem. The album features guest appearances by Ben Gibbard wiki
lyrics here

Jay went and sat at the piano. Played flawlessly like the pro that he is. Nice change of pace, lyrics fit right in.

Voodoo Candle it is. The band did the rockin SV version, not the Canyon version. Gibbard singin the chorus with Jay worked well.

Sweet Marie

Dylan. Jay lead vocals. enuff said

Old Shoes took us home with lyrics like farewell, sun in her eyes, I'll be gone. Jay harmony Ben lead.
Goodbye, so long, the road calls me. Its Tom Waits and the lyrics are here

The crowd seemed 50-50% DCFC and JF, appreciative of the opening act, both artists, even Mark got a big standing O from an older long hair dude in the middle front row seat

I'm physically sick with jealousy and sadness that I'm not going to see any of these shows and that other people will ...

that's probably a sin.

See you in hell, sinners!
