I've never thought of Bruce's music as being "glossy," though I think albums like Born in the U.S.A. and Tunnel of Love get drowned in some poor production decisions. I do have to say I'm simply flabbergasted that you would refer to something like Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, or Greetings From Asbury Park as shit.
I guess 'shit' is a bit harsh. There is frustration over something I'm not connecting with or appreciating properly maybe. The guy's songwriting skill is obviously beyond question incredible... and as Brian mentioned here years ago, he's a phenomenal guitarist. There's a lot of people with what I consider superb taste in music, among some of my buds and on this board as well... with high regards for the Bruce/ E. Street catalog. I guess I feel left out in a way... but I can't stand to listen to most of it, as it hits my ear as showy, toss-in-every-instrument-you-can-think-of extravagance.

I love Magic. And, while I'm not sure they can be considered albums in the traditional sense, Tracks and The Promise are fantastic.

There is a funny soundbite in The Promise documentary where Bruce talks about how Miami Steve always tries to talk him into keeping everything as raw as possible. For almost everything Bruce has done since Nebraska, I tend to agree with Steve, and can very much see where Shuck's coming from.

Personally, I miss early Bruce r&b and soul. He seemed to step completely away from it after Born To Run.....at least on record he did.

Some people have an appreciation for the Boss gloss. I don't. My first exposure to Bruce was when my mumsy constantly spun Nebraska. That's one of my all-time favorite albums. Which makes the rest of his catalog so irritating for me to listen to.

Heaven help me I've tried to get Bruce, but aside from Nebraska it's all shit. So much gloss. And why so many chimes?
So I guess you haven't really listened to Darkness.
Have you? You're telling me that it's not another glossy over-produced 'Boss' record with chimes, glockenspiel, multiple horn sections and the kitchen sink thrown into the mix?
I believe it's the toilet on that one and not the sink.
