Does anybody listen to those Traveling Wheelbarrow guys anymore. I know a couple of them died but that was a hell of a band.

Only ever obsessed With Neil Young (and by default CSN&Y and Buffalo Springfield). My attention span is far to short to Obsess. I was in to the musical scenes more than individual bands.

Well starting out in my youth it was:

Van Halen
Steve Vai
and any other great guitar instrumentalist (is that a word?)

Highschool it was:

Live
Counting Crows
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Pink Floyd
Zepplin
the Doors

College it was:

The Dead
Dinosaur Jr
Uncle Tupelo
Son Volt
Jayhawks
Eric Clapton
Frog Holler (local band that I followed from its early roots)

Post college:

any Bluegrass
Stevie Ray Vaughn
CCR
Whiskeytown
Ryan Adams
Wilco
Old 97's
Josh Rouse

And after all that, the other night I listened to Pink Floyd "Animals" all the way through, and loved it!!

The Smiths, and Morrissey were one of those artists you either were totally in love with, or didnt like...I havent really met any middle-of-the-road fans .
That is true...and even now reading an article about how it is 20 years on since Meat Is Murder made me drag them all out again and play them at deafening volume!

There've been many, but the major ones have been (in roughly chronological order):

The Beatles
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
Rush
Yes
King Crimson
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Grateful Dead
Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Laura Nyro
Sly and the Family Stone
Miles Davis
Steely Dan
Jayhawks
Nick Drake
Kirsty MacColl
Bill Evans
Beethoven
Shostakovich
John Fahey
Throwing Muses
Jay Farrar
Radiohead

There have been genre phases, too: times where I'm way into funk, bluegrass, electronica, hard rock, etc.

Guided By Voices, all the way. There's a band you can spend a couple of years getting your head around.
