Was Mark the guy playing keyboards?
If so, he was quite impressive.

I was the one right up front of Jay. It too was the first time I had ever seen him (as mentioned above) and I was hoping to see a setlist to help me out with the show. Unfortunately the only setlist was the one infront of Mark and I was unable to make it out. Then Jay actually picked it up and crumpled it up after the main set, before the encore, which I have never seen that before.

The setlist I have posted here is correct I'm just missing the opener, does anyone know what it was? I would really like to find out.

Five songs into the night Jay said "How ya doin'? Good." Then he said something along the lines that this show came at the tail end of shows in New Zealand and Austrailia and we are calling it the Commonwealth tour. He proceeded to ask "What do you all do for the Commonwealth? Through a big party? Well You should" After Jay and Mark went into "All Of Your Might".

Okay, which one of you guys was the brunette standing right up at the very front, in front of Jay? I assumed you were from the board but didn't want to go up & say something. I was standing with some friends up on the side, in front of Mark.

It was AN AMAZING SHOW!! My first time seeing Jay live so, I was thrilled! My dear friend Dayna took some awesome photos on her digital camera and has promised to come to this board and post a link to her photo album. I even made her take pics of me with Jay in the background so i could have pics of Jay and I. :-) yes, i'm a total nerd.
Anyway, she will probably post them tonight when she gets home from work.

The opener Shannon Lyon is a friend of Dayna's & he told her that during sound check, Jay's son was on stage with him, pulling at his pant legs while Jay was singing. :-)

Friend of mine was at the show.
He called me on his Bell Mobility™ cell phone and let me listen to a song.
(Why choose Bell Mobility™? No Hidden Fees, No Connection Charges, No Problems. Bell Mobility™ the number one choice for people who enjoy alt country music and calling their friends from shows in Canada. Sign up today at http://www.expressvu.com.)
The picture on the phone wasn't great, so I don't know who the keyboard player was at the show, but he totally rocked.

Hey Everybody, I'm new to this forum as of tonight (Thursday June 17, 2004) is the first time I saw Jay Farrar (at Lee's Palace in Toronto). I had wanted to see Jay as a solo artist or in Son Volt for years. I remember I even had tickets to see Son Volt in the late nineties but I believe I went to a Neil Young concert instead.
Last weekend I saw some of Jay's ol' bandmates in Wilco at bonnaroo which only made me more excited about Jay's gig at Lee's.
I didn't know until I read the Jay Farrar interview by Tim Perlich in the NOW, Toronto's Entertainment Weekly, that Jay was performing as a duo with Mark Spencer and not with a band. Which made the night even more mellow than I had already expected. Though I'm not complaining I was just happy to see Jay.
Here was the setlist, to the best of my ability:
Start time: 10:47PM
1. ? (I didn't know this tune I believe it had the lyric "Woke up in the west" if that rings a bell for anybody or if anybody knows what song was performed please let me know) (Jay solo acoustic with harp)
2. Make It Alright (with Mark on telecaster)
3. Feel Free
4. No Rolling Back (Mark on lap steel, every time Mark pulled out the lap steel it was a definite highlight for me)
5. Cahokian (Mark on tele)
6. All Of Your Might
7. Heart On The Ground
8. Barstow (lap steel)
9. Damn Shame (lap steel and Jay on harp)
10, Driving The View (tele)
11. Vitamins
12. Feed Kill Chain
13. California
14. Voodoo Candle
15. Straightface
Encore 1: 16. Tear Stained Eye (Jay solo with harp)
17. Doesn't Have To Be That Way (lap steel)
18. Windfall (tele)
Encore 2: 19. Love You To (both on acoustic guitars) (George Harrison song on The Beatles "Revolver")
Show end: 12:07AM (Total 1 hour and 20 minutes)
I was hoping for Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" as I want a Young cover at every show I attend. But I really can't complain about "Love You To", not only was it well performed by the duo, it is also a nice obscure selection out of the Beatle canon. I have seen thirty acts cover twenty-five Beatles songs. Now I've seen thirty-one acts cover twenty-six Beatles tunes.
I look forward to seeing Jay again in any format, though I hope to see him again soon with a whole touring band or with any luck with Son Volt.

Sounds awesome. Thanks for the review. I was pulling for you on that Left a Slide... think I'll go listen to it now. The Beatles cover really must have been amazing.

Just got home from the show tonight and it reaffirmed my love for Jay's music.

WOW!

Good shit all night. Pretty standard setlist from what I've seen but played really well. Mostly TB and Sebastapol. Jay's voice sounded awesome but Mark was absolutely on fire - must've been eating his Wheaties today. The interplay between the two of them was phenomenal tonight.

Highlights:

Driving the View
All Of Your Might
Vitamins
California
Doesn't Have To Be This Way - unbelievable song, performed beautifully
Love You To (Beatles cover) - I had no idea that Jay was covering this and it blew my mind. They jammed on this one for a solid five minutes after the song was done and they were going at it hardcore. Mark was playing acoustic but had some effect on it that made it sound like a sitar. Jay's voice was perfect for this tune. The only downside is that it made me wish Jay would mix it up a little more - it was great to hear something unexpected and out if the blue.

Final note: didn't get my Left a Slide. Oh well, maybe next time....
