Flat Duo Jets flat-out rockin'
I just saw Athens, Ga. Inside/Out for the first time last night.
It was originally released in 1987, and is finally out on DVD.
My wife saw it in the theater when it came out,
and fortunately, she bought the soundtrack
before IRS Records went under.
The soundtrack is a terrific collection,
with tracks by REM, Pylon, and some lesser-known
acts like Love Tractor, Dreams So Real and the Flat Duo Jets.
The Flat Duo Jets's performance has to be one of the most
exuberant ever caught on film.
Perhaps not technically the best, but a whole lot of fun.
Appropriately, among the DVD extras is a short interview
where Jack White admits to the influence of the Flat Duo Jets
on the White Stripes's one-guitar-with-a-drummer approach.
The documentary The Brother With Perfect Timing about
the South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand)
who was discovered and brought to America by Duke Ellington,
has some beautiful, majestic music. Ibrahim's blending of
African rhythms, church music and modern jazz has been
an important influence for many jazz composers.
Highly recommended for anyone who likes jazz.

My favorite scene was John Lee Hooker performing on the sidewalk.twitcher73 wrote:I know someone already mentioned the Blues Brothers... there are some great musical performances in that film - Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin... but I think what takes the cake is Cab Calloway and band doing Minnie The Moocher...
I think it's just before Jake and Elwood walk into the diner.

i saw the last waltz on dvd earlier this summer and it really rocks the whole thing!
i also like aimee mann singing save me at the end of the movie magnolia.
the band (not the band) singing elton john's tiny dancer on the bus in almost famous, corny but very cool.
let go by frou frou at the very end of garden state, i so love that movie!
the sound track of i am sam with all the beatles covers...two of us and across the universe!
the whole soundtrack of casino...though i am not a fan of mafia movies.
i am sure there are more but it is time to find coffee...
see ya,
ellie
oops i forgot the whole sound track from the long riders...ry cooder
