Crap ...

I didn't get to weigh in on this.
I would have easily suggested some Jay-Solo action.
I love Damaged Son and Dead Promises.
hmph.

Ah well ....

well, I've heard that song before. I guess I never payed attention to the name. I probably listened to Straightaways about 4 times this weekend, I was out of town fishing - of course. But thanks for the informative replies.

I too love message boards.

Watson is a road in St. Louis that was also formerly Route 66. Along the road was a motel called the "Coral Court Motel." Built in the early 40's, it was Steamline Moderne brick and glass with enclosed garages and was well known as a "no-tell-motel."

In the early 90's, the Coral Court had deteriorated to the point it was condemned. Several efforts were made to save it as a Route 66 & St. Louis icon, but eventually the motel was torn down and a subdivision was built where the motel once stood. Another part of history lost forever.

I think "Way Down Watson" is Jay's lament those events.

"PUT WHISKEY ON THE WOUNDS SALT THE GLASS AND SAY GOODBYE NO FEEL-GOOD SCENES TO BRING IT BACK JUST FALLEN BRICK AND BROKEN GLASS"

For more info on the Coral Court (including sordid tales of kidnapping and never-found hidden ransom money) check out this website: http://www.coralcourt.com/main.html

A predictable yet entirely worthy winner.
Maybe next time it should be 'Any Jay song...other than Windfall'!

A seperate poll of only Jay's solo songs would be interesting...

That makes a fine compilation.
Sad as this sounds....I find it fascinating, and very surprising, that no Jay solo songs were nominated.

From Straightaways, Son Volt's second album, last song.
