I've seen him live a few times too. Solo and with a band. Most were great, some were poor and one was outstanding. So that's a pretty ok strike rate.

This fascination he has for crappy metal is annoying though. 29, Easy Tiger and Cardinology were very poor I thought.

I disagree. There were certainly some subpar releases but most were outstanding. Also, the 3 times I saw The Cardinals, each time they made a case for best band out there. 2-0 soon becomes 2-3.

I think he took a step back for about a year and a half. I've gotta good feeling about this.... I hope he starts playing live again.

If memory serves, it was the record company's decision. I pre-ordered III/IV and am looking forward to it.

....and from Amazon.com:

In 2007 Ryan Adams and the Cardinals entered Electric Lady recording
studios on 8th street in NYC and went in for a session intended to
last two weeks. Six months and over 60 tracks later, they emerged
with the album Easy Tiger. But it was only a glimpse into the depth of
the work the band had undertaken and the vast amount of material
that was recorded.
As the sessions wound around into the deep winter months a
double album emerged, a rock record that felt more like a hybrid of
all the records that the band had mutually consumed as kids...
from influences as wide as KISS and The Cars.
Originally hidden away in the vault while the band hit the road to
support Easy Tiger, and now for the first time here in its entirety is
the Cardinals second double-album concept rock opera about the
80's, ninjas, cigarettes, sex, and pizza.
Enjoy volume III/IV, by Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, from the
turning point in the classic line up of the band featuring....
Catherine Popper on bass (her last with the band), Neal Casal
on guitar and vocals (his first with the band) Brad Pemberton on
the drums, Jon Graboff on the Steel Guitar (as well as a few
other things) and Jamie The Candyman Candiloro on piano and
synths, here producing again as well.

The below is from the downloads section of the RA website:

These downloads are some tracks recorded on the set-up day of the III/IV / Easy Tiger sessions. The band is caught here going though some riffs and just outright jamming with some room mic's on.

A few of these became songs on III/IV and there is even a riff that was once a song called "Closure" that blew and eventually became "You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Ghost)" which is a worldwide smash for Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, and is the theme song for the Sub-National Natural Grass Level Football Association, the world renowned English Football team that lives in a cloud pattern in the sky in Ryan's "day-time mind". There is a tree growing through it.

To the best of anyones memory, the personnel on these jam sessions is Ryan & Neal on guitar, Brad on drums, and Jon "The Slyder" Graboff on bass (yes, he even kick ass on bass!)...

Enjoy this snapshot of the first day of III/IV.

Well, Follow The Lights, an EP came out and then Cardinology. So if this new release is III/IV then I guess Cardinology is either number five or six.

Where does Cardinology fit into this new math

Cold Roses was the first release for RA & The Cardinals and Jacksonville City Nights the second. Both were released in 2005 along with 29 which was credited as a Ryan Adams album.

So which albums are considered "I & II"?

Is Cold Roses considered I $ II, as someone upthread suggests?

Is Cardinology either I or II?

I'm a very casual fan, so apparently missed something.

From what I understand it was recorded in 2006, shortly after Cold Roses(I/II?).
