unchartedthickets,

Far be it from me to correct anybody, but I believe motherfucker should be spelled as one word, not two. You're welcome.

I liked Rick Wakeman's sound on Journey and on King Arthur. I think Mark Spencer could take some costuming cues from Mr. Wakeman.

love his guitar / pedal steel / lap steel work

his keyboard tones are the worst i've heard since Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" tour

Excuse me, but Mark Spencer's stylings do not have universal appeal. Believe it or not, some people don't like Jay Farrar either, and would never lick his boots. As I said, pedal steel and all that vein, including organ-like keyboards, are just too twangy/corny for me. As for guitar, his sound is not interesting to me. Maybe he has great technique. I don't care. I honestly wish he would leave Son Volt.
you have to say that the man can play. there is just no way around it. you my not like his style, but the technique is outstanding.

i don't want to bother trying to win your heart over to the other side. for all i know you could be a famous guitar/photographer from reading your comments but i doubt it. usually good creatives aren't so fucking sullen but i could be wrong. take me for instance...hehe. i'll take your word with a grain of salt and just wonder why everyone isn't making good photo's or playing multiple instruments like they were born to play them. no one said Spencer had "universal appeal" but some people would say that they were pretty much astounded by the caliber of his performance. others, like yourself, are quite negative but you seem to think Spencer just plain sucks. what i really want to know is are you just one those brilliant genius mother fuckers who can back their opinion with solid artistic awesomeness or are you just another boring critic mother fucker with a point and shoot.

I disagree. I have a feeling if Jay posted here* his message would be quite similar.

*FYI Jay posts here, just not as Jay.
I disagree. I feel that Farrar would come off Spencer-esque if he posted. I like Jay's music but he activates my douche-dar.
Jay Farrar on a fucking message board? Gimme a break, the guy doesn't even know what an electronic-mail is!

There is little doubt involved in the hypothesis that if Jay Farrar posteth here, it would be under the dcarter moniker.

When I saw Mark and Jay in Des Moines a few years ago, I was amazed. Mark is an amazing player!
