I think you should probably listen to it before you say it seems lame.sam6025 wrote:I haven't listened to the album yet, ...
Patti Smith is in the movie, and wrote a page of the cd/dvd liner notes- and in the liner notes, she says she had never read any Kerouac at all before being asked to be a part of this. That makes her participation in the documentary sound questionable on first glance. But as I watched her take on things in the movie, and in her thoughts on the liner notes, I like the idea of people who have been Kerouac fans forever giving their take, alongside the thoughts of some folks just immersing themselves in it recently.
As for Jay, I believe he has a library of Kerouac's work, and in many ways models his entire writing style on Kerouac, so having him write the soundtrack and album makes a lot of sense to me, whether he read Big Sur years ago or in 2007.
Mega - Gibbard wrote the title track, and has a co-writing credit with Jay on The Void. The rest are all Jay (and Jack.)

Sam, innaresting point you have, but remember that Big Sur was fresh to Jay and perhaps was more inspirational to him because of it.
I also think using an author's words, not just any author but Keroauc's, is a just a great idea for this project. Its just friggin brilliant. Who else woulda done it?
Gibbard wrote nothing on this I believe. It was all Jay. Still think incorporating Gibbard changed things up and Mark Spencer's pedal steel took it from an 8 to a 10.
Maybe I'm drinking the Kool-Aid but I think the art world is stopped and is focusing on Keroauc for a few moments...atleast here in LA...my world has and I'm thrilled with this moment in time.

I haven't listened to the album yet, but I'm a little bummed to read Farrar was "a big Kerouac fan, but had never read Big Sur before..." I'm guessing he was one of the "On the Road" fans who identified as a fan of all things Kerouac. Outside of On the Road, Big Sur is the best and most important book Kerouac wrote. I've read all of Kerouac's books. Read 12 in a single summer back in college. Big Sur was the one everyone said was amazing, but it was the end, so you couldn't jump ahead to it. [
Seems lame that this album was written by someone who pretty much read the book to make the soundtrack and in the end, an album. Kinda weak...

There's something circular about this "One Fast Move" production that grabs me.
From post war America, with the birth of rock n roll, Keroauc and his place in art...a strain that ran thru Bobby Dylan's words, songs and life...Bob's DNA runs thru Jay Farrar, but it runs thru many of us, thru Neil, the Beatles and countless other artists...thru childhood christianity and adulthood existentialism and/or Buddhism thoughts...the questions, the artwork of Van Gogh, Beethoven, Miles....the fascinating questions of life and death, and birth of our kids...the passing of our parents and friends...the pursuit of love and kicks...the growing appreciation for Jay Farrar's modest works of genius somehow brings us to ...
a breathing of life to Jack Keroauc, with his lust for ectasy and grave despair, his free association and free mind...somehow this documentary led to a collaboration of Keroauc words and Jay Farrar music.
