It should be noted that DBT was, not too long along, a triad of powers. Jason Isbell wrote some of the most important tunes in their catalog:
Outfit and GD Loney Love to name couple ---
If I were in a band, I would want his gig-- sing one or two songs on a cd, play rythm on the rest --- Somewhat like Phil Lesh only with a better voice.

an affirmation to mroctober's comments. i have said before the dbt's are a band to be truly appreciated in a live setting. their recordings are great but their live show takes the band to a new level and is their forte. and, patterson is the cornerstone of that live dynamic. cooley is to patterson as keith is to jagger(from a live perspective). both are essential, however, cooley is the bridge while patterson is the chorus.
I would probably pick about 6 or 7 Cooley songs in my top 10 DBT songs. But, I think Patterson Hood is still the guy who carries the band. Live, he's the clear frontman and he probably wrote a much larger percentage of their songs. The album that really hooked me on DBT was 'Alabama Ass Whuppin', which is almost all Hood songs.

Agree 100%. I like some of Hood's songs better than some of Cooley's songs, but overall, I think Cooley is a freakin' genius. The song that really clued me in was Zip City. Southern Rock Opera was the first album by them that I heard and I didn't know much about them. After a few listens, it became apparent that there was just something about Cooley's songs, particularly Zip City, that just had a greater impact on me. Patterson is good, but Cooley's stuff really does it for me.
