I hear you. I miss him, but understand why he's gone. I doubt they'd be able to function as a group these days.dcarter wrote:Well put, Greg and I agree with everything said above (except for missing JB in Wilco. I definitely loved the Bennett era but I think the band has gone forward. It would have been cool if JB could have stayed and took a lesser role but that wasn't going to happen). Being There and Summerteeth are probably my two favorite Wilco records. I'm sure Jeff Tweedy would admit Jay''s contributions to both these records was quite important. Also, I think you can say the same for the Mermaid Ave records. I've really enjoyed his solo albums the past few years, especially Bigger Than Blue and the Palace At 4AM.
Finally, I will say this before Doug does; the movie is called I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.
I was wondering what this thread was about! Who's heart and why?

You may very well be right, Mr. Spencer. I will freely admit that I have limited knowledge of his playing. I will take you at your word that there are examples I am unaware of.
Having said that, whoever the guitarist is on Impossible Germany is really good. Again, he's not playing a super locrian at 2,000 notes per second, he is serving the song. And it is really cool.
Maybe in my first 20 years of playing and teaching, I was more impressed with technique. I can now appreciate those who add color and texture to a song like Impossible Germany.
This is something Mr. Spencer is great at, and I have respect for you as a player, although I don't see the conection between Ayn Rand and Ann Coulter. Ann Coulter is a republican whore.
I am still kicking myself in the ass for not buying your blue tele you sold recently. That was a beautiful guitar.

I want to break your heart
This is playing on Comcast on demand for free. I don't know if they have different lineups in different markets.
But, at any rate, I thought I would listen with an open mind. My thoughts:
Jeff seems to shoot from the hip as a writer. He and Jay are not in the same universe, and I wonder how they ever got along musically. They are totally different and comparisons are meaningless because they have different goals musically.
He writes good melodies. The last song on the video is really cool.
I don't see what the fuss is concerning teh Bennet. He seemed to portray himself as a mad scientist who secretly ran the band, but I saw nothing in his abilities that a guitarist in a garage band couldn't do better. Maybe there are examples I am unaware of that show something different. I'm not saying he should tap and play phrygian dominate or anything, but Boquist, Frame, or Farrar even are better players based on what I saw. I would've kicked him out too.
Jeff seems like a nice guy who is doing his thing, and that's cool. I've been pretty hard on Jeff in the past. My brother gave me Sky Blue Sky, and I thought it was pretty good. What the video showed from Yankee foxtrot seemed pretty good. After I log out, I'll see if it's on itunes.
So, for Doug, who's thread I ruined with my dumbass statements, I say once you take Jay out of the picture, and just listen to Jeff on his own terms, it's not that bad. Some of it is really good. I'm trying not to offend anyone on either side, and as time goes on, I wonder if taking sides are productive for either artist.
So for a diehard Jay fan, That is movement.
