Hands up for all who....
Yes Murph you are are 100% correct.
The proof is looking at the map of how people voted, by county, during the last US election. Its amazing. If we did not have the current electoral college then we would dismiss most of the geographical United States and only count the Metro areas, which reminds me of the Berlin song "metro". I am fading but, it safe to say that farmers vote will not be consumed by Berkely and NYU profs. Oh and college and the other college turd profs who claim they teach at Universities when there is nothing "uni" about it. Should be "PanEverythingexceptreligionversities" profs.
True story: I had a prof who attempted to teach Western Intellectual and Social History by showing the full version of Pink Floyd's the Wall. Isat and looked at the people watching the Wall and the frat bros were asleep, the "nerds" were taking notes, and I was laughing. If I wanted to watch Floyd I would have stayed home, drank a couple beers, smoke some recreational herbs, and not have to pay fuckin' college tuition. what a dick. prof dick. and the wall. Waste of time and money at a State college.

Yea I see what you mean Sticky, Norwegian politics is very interesting indeed, lots of good discussion going on at the moment.(but you can't bitch though, since you know, you don't have a citizenship and all) I'm flattered that you (like most people 'round here) see my genious for what it is. But democracy, a universal thing.. I don't think so, it's strictly Norwegian and cannot be transferred into another (yet similar) context.

I stand corrected. I made the assumption that the discussion was about the US elections. Please carry on your conversation about Norwegian politics at your leisure and disregard my earlier statements. I know nothing of Norwegian politics and would feel very stupid commenting on something I know so little about. I await your boundless knowledge and look forward to the education.

Yea, I know alot of people would like to be in my positionSticky wrote:Last time I checked, the USA wasn't part of Norway. We'd all like to be 23 year old, unemployed, Norwegian, poster nutbags, but not all of us can.

note to self: that card saying: don't get irritated really works!

You can fight for a cause without violence Murph. I agree that violence isn't a solution to anything (Except in self-defense) You can fight by stating your opinions (writing, protesting etc) no need for violence. Or you can go by organizations, or your own country. Political and democratical means are more preferable than military ones in my eyes.
Nice poster there Sticky - Last time I checked, it was still my country.

Not voting doesn't make any statement. Let's be honest. Not happy with the two major party candidates? Vote Green/Libertarian/Communist. Think that's pissing away a vote?
In '92 Perot got something like 10-18% of the popular vote [that's approx., I'm not going to look it up]. Woefully short of victory, but that statement by dissatisfied voters forced the two major parties to sit up, take notice, and shift their platforms over the next four years. That's a much more powerful statement than if those same 10-18% had sat on their cans. By voting, they effected change in the major parties. By not voting, the major parties wouldn't have gotten that message.

I voted. Not that my vote made a shit, as I live in Texas (a hideously red state, as you know). I voted anyway. I knew it wouldn’t make a difference here, but I wanted my “I voted” sticker, and my opportunity to publicly denounce (through careful straight-ticket coloring-in-of-the-bubbles) this fucktard of a “President”. He was a shitty state Governor for us and has thus far completely bypassed all his gubernatorial atrocities a thousand-fold with his Presidential term(s). I am continually disgusted by his very existence. So disgusted that I’m probably flagged by the FBI. I might even have my own file!!
While, I’m not real happy with the Dems, they’re all we’ve got in the way of hope. I hope, that the Dems (collectively) take the damn gloves OFF and start doing their jobs less passively. Kerry and Boxer have been doing well so far, recently.
I protested his “election” in 2000 right there in front of his house in Austin, TX (the Governor’s Mansion), and if I were in close proximity to the White House, you can bet I’d be there freezing my tail off to express my disdain for the bastard there today as well.
I could go on.

I think what Jeffra meant was that we must be concerned with what Madison (I believe) referred to as the "excesses" of democracy. For instance, in a true democracy the potential exists for the majority to dominate at the expense of the rights of the minority. Concern over such excesses are indeed why the framers designed our system to be a republic rather than a direct democracy.
And, Frenchy, you keep pointing out that a democracy is something worth fighting for. I think the world has seen enough of people who are eager to fight for what they don't understand (freedom, democracy, power, faith, and the general "good"). I'm not saying this to insult you--I'm just saying that about the last thing we need is a fight--especially over something about which there are legitimate differences of opinion.
