ACL Fire
(CBS 42) AUSTIN The smoke has cleared after a large fire on Stratford Drive in Zilker Park (map) at the Austin City Limits Festival Friday.

Thousands of folks were listening to music when they saw flames and smelled smoke.

They say that's when the loud speakers warned them to stay back.

Firefighters say they feared the worst, and so did some in the crowd -- a blaze burning at a festival with propane tanks exploding makes for a dangerous day.

Austin Emergency Medical Services received word about the fire shortly after 2:30 p.m. Crews assigned to the festival responded the scene.

Four men were injured, two were severely burned. All were taken to Brackenridge Hospital. There names are not being released at this time. The men were vendors, and not patrons, officials say.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., the severely burned men were transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

The fire started in a vendor's personal camper and then caught a nearby car on fire. At one point flames were higher than the trees. Thick, black smoke billowed from the scene.

The fire spread to a fence and a tree.

Smoke and fire were visible throughout the Downtown area.

A police officer told CBS 42 News that the fire started behind one of the bars near a food vendor.
I had nothing to do with this, I swear!!!

After seeing an incredible Wilco show in Dallas on Friday night (more on that in a second) I made my way back to Austin on Saturday. Hearing the news of the fire on the radio, I quickly thought of Calexico's post and nervously began to imagine that I better steer clear of Zilker Park. For a second I felt like I was in a Dean Koontz novel. Helicoptors would be following my every move. Not realizing that I had unknowingly attended a Wilco show in Dallas that was put on by none other than Charles Attal himself, I began to fret that my destiny would find me in the back of a dumpster somewhere in S. Austin, my body covered in ACL programs and broken souvenir cups. Upon entering the brand spanking new venue in Dallas where Wilco performed, all entrants wishing to drink adult libations were asked to present their drivers liscence at the door. After scanning said liscence into a computerized turnstile a wristband instantly popped out of the other end. On the wristband read several numbers, the venues name, and C3 presents. As in Charles Attal and Co. Just to the right of the C3 was my name, IN BOLD PRINT. This was a concert first for me. I must admit to having attended several concerts and sporting events in the past year and never had I encountered such a "device." Just to be safe, I poked my head into the arms of other concert goers to ensure that Big Brother Charlie was not watching just me...

To be continued.

(I have to bolt, will finish my story later.)

I wasn't going to see the White Stripes anyway cause I left and saw three fantastic bands for $15 at the Parish. The Heartless Bastards, Pearlene, and White Denim. Holy cow this was a great show. Nothing at the fest could come close.

Wilco, QotSA, and Midlake all had really fantastic sets. Honorable mentions included The Broken West, Back Door Man, and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah.

Steve Earle who I am sure is worshiped by some on here was a tad boring for me. Didn't even bother with Robert Earl Keen. Never even considered seeing Dylan cause watching a screen from a half mile away isn't my idea of live music.

It was way too freaking hot, and way to freaking crowded. Even the Gospel tent where you usually go for refuge from the sun (and to worship god of course) was jam packed.

Saturday was for the most part void of anything great, but Friday and Sunday did have some highlights.

Plus there was a roach on our table at Guero's. The Roux has great porkchops though.

Based on last year's experience at ACL, I blame the sun. Whatever happened, the sun started it. The sun will finish it. The sun behind Son Volt that day singed my retinas beyond repair, and my eyes are now smoldering sockets of hate.

What does Hartlepool have to do with anything?
It's a quip about over-reacting, you old sod.

I had a great experience at ACL last year. I didn't go for the headliners, I am older than than usual festival goin' ilk and have never been to a music festival ever, other than dead shows, which may have seemed festival-like to some folks, and am so not a hipster. I love Austin, and have family there that are involved with the festival. I obviously went last yr to see SV, but it was great to see a lot of other musicians that I wouldn't have made an effort to see if I hand't been there. Plus, I met some cool people from the board. Priceless.

yea this is a good time
& free to boot
Warren Hellman's generosity is surpassed by no one
downside is that they are short sets
but there sure is a lot of them

I agree with you Sam about festivals. They sound really great with all of the bands but I see more negatives. The crowds, cost, discomfort, etc. are all a pain but the biggest reason that I don't go to festivals anymore is because you see an abbreviated set. I'd rather spend for individual shows without all of the festival negatives and see a full set. I totally understand why people go - the camaraderie/party aspect can be appealing - but it just isn't my bag. Smaller, one day festivals like Tropical Heatwave that WMNF, the local community radio station puts on, are cool. My wife and I have talked since it's inception of going to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, though. It just seems like it has to be great. We'll get there one of these years!

Are the White Stripes really that popular? I mean, to me, they're playing theaters on tour, not stadiums or anything. Only White Stripes fans are bummed about this. No one else really cares, there are like 119 other bands to see.

I realize the intent is over the message board behavior...but still...

Also, the reason tickets are so cheap right now has NOTHING to do with the White Stripes cancellation and has everything to do with too many idiots buying tickets strictly to sell. eBay brings out the "tard scalpers" who buy like 10-20 tickets and try to sell them. Then they end up having to dump them at a fraction and lose their ass.

Besides, who wants to go to ACL, really? It's a miserable experience for music. You walk literal miles throughout the day to see bands from 50 yards away (if you're lucky!), there is no on-site parking, so you have to find a space in the city, stand in a busline for hours, deal with people at the venue...it's a nightmare. Went as press one year and still had a shitty time, I couldn't imagine just being a paying customer, I know it's got to be much worse.

ACL Fest is one of those events where hipsters want to go so they can say they saw all these different bands when they're older. But you miss out on the actual music, it's just standing there saying you saw people.

so the bono thing is out. i heard someone at a bar say something about it, and figured an old timer like myself had big info but according to yer post it is all over the net.

if it were me, Pearl Jam, willie nelson or dixie chicks would soothe my pissed offness at no white stripes. but what do i care, I never intended on going anyway. i'm sick of all this music shit anyway. this town gives me a headache when it comes to these music things.

hearing sv, emmy lou and patty griffin from previous years pretty much satisfied me for years to come.

so CFB i am sorry for your frustrations. let go and let...........

regards,
