What kind of press did he Search get? Nada. Nothing. Not a damn thing outside of a couple of reviews. No Depression didn't even do a cover.

Meanwhile, Tweedy is on the cover of Guitar World accoustic, and many bigger name mags have done something about Wilco.

Maybe if Jay went to rehab or hit on Tweedy's wife/girlfriend (I don't know which he has, if any), he would get more press.

Maybe Jay should do a video about SV, and the interviewer could make Jeff think he's doing an interview about alt country when in fact, he is only helping to promote the new SV album.

This is way cynical, and I apologize for that. I just wish Jay cared enough about his career to promote himself a little bit.
Wilco obviosly has a great press manager. Their releases often coincide with a documentary or book release. Here are Jay's thoughts about it in Harp.

I mention the story about Wilco’s album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, being rejected by its major label after it was made.
“They refused to put out my first solo album (’Sebastopol’) as well, during that same shakeup at Warner Brothers,” Farrar mutters. “I just didn’t make a story out of it.” You mean, I say, you didn’t put out a press release. “Right. Evidently I should have.”

If Jeff Tweedy hadn't been in UT this thread wouldn't exist.

That's a fair question. I think a far greater percentage of Jay's fans have been fans from backin the day, while I think it's the complete opposite for Jeff fans. So yeah, I might tolerate Wilco a little better.

Ok, I do have one complaint in regards to Wilco. I was looking over their recent setlists for the Sky Blue Sky tour and noted that their playing no more than 6 songs from the new album. Notably missing are some of the most beautiful tunes (Please Be Patient With Me, On and On and On, Either Way). The rest of the setlist is comprised of the same standard tunes they have been playing for the last two tours (Kingpin, IATTBYH,Shot in the Arm, etc...) These are great songs and all but why not support the new album some. And if your not going to play the new ones, play some older material that hasnt been played on the aformentioned previous tours (Monday, Pick up the Change, Box Full of Letters, hell even some Loose Fur).

Maybe... I fell into the whole "I hate Tweedy because I love Farrar" snare that many know. I bought AM just for the Brian Henneman guitar work, and because I heard Dash 7 on internet radio and was swooned. Each record after took a while to digest, but I love 'em right now...

It's a great question Doug, but I honestly dont think Jeff would still be playing music today if not for Uncle Tupelo. And this is coming from someone who loves Tweedy as much as Farrar. I truely believe that Jay really inspired Jeff in so many ways. Jay was in many way's the big brother that Jeff never had. That's what makes the break-up of UT so sad, yet so intriguing. Jay was born with an intuition for songwritting that only comes along ever so often. Dylan, Townes, Bruce, etc... Jeff knew that he was in the presence of greatness and Jeff was more than willing to let Jay take him under his wings. To this day, Jeff still mentions how influential Jay was to him.

Look how insecure Jeff was about his songwritting early on. He actually wanted Jay to sing his songs on No Depression. This had to have been extremely hard on Jeff, having to follow a Jay track like Whiskey Bottle with a simpleton sounding tune like Train. No knock on Jeff's songwritting but let's face it, the yin and the yang was what made this band so great. Jay would hit you in the gut with a track like Still Be Around and then Jeff would make you wipe away the tears with Watch Me Fall. Jeff was the sweet tasting mango to Jay's fiery hot serrano. Together they made the best tasting salsa you ever ate.

Eventually Jeff gained more confidence in himself, became a better songwritter, better guitar player, and a better performer than he or anyone else who knew him ever would have imagined. All because of Jay.

Great question. Because of JT's involvement in UT, anything he puts out I really want to like, so I give it extra time, or listen to it more looking and hoping for something to grab me and make me like it. i figure if he was in UT how could he put out anything that is bad.

I can honestly say that JT's involvement with UncleTupelo has no bearing on my favorable appreciation of Wilco. I view those two bands independent of each other or as independently as I can.

I think it's unfair to judge an artist's current output strictly in the context of previous output. It can be handy, though, when describing that current output, but I do believe that artists (and both principals of UT in particular) don't really want their current work to regarded as extensions of their previous work despite the argument that it has evolved from it.

The only thing that really gets me is how Tweedy gets all this press coverage. He must have a manager who cares about him.

Since I thought this was very interesting, I decided to quote it again in the hopes of getting some responses.
