Crystal meth use in US twice higher than estimated

Crystal methamphetamine use among young American adults is twice higher than previously estimated, according to National Institutes of Health (NIH) research published Friday.

Also known as "ice," "crystal," "glass," and "tina," crystal meth is a highly addictive, inexpensive, colorless stimulant that affects the central nervous system.

Typically smoked, it is used by 2.8 percent of young adults aged 18-26, according to the revised results of a 2001-2002 study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the NIH.

The initial research had found crystal use at 1.4 percent among adults aged 19-28.

"This new information gives us a clearer picture of use among young adults, but also raises new concerns," said NIH Director Elias Zerhouni.

"Even occasional use of crystal methamphetamine is associated with multiple health and social risks, including a negative impact on families as well as straining emergency departments and law enforcement resources," he added.

The new NIH study found crystal users are "disproportionately white and male" and live mainly in the western part of the United States. Native Americans, it also found, were 4.2 times as likely as whites to use crystal.

"Users also tend to have lower social economic status, use other substances, such as alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine, and the male users are more likely to have had incarcerated fathers," the NIH said.

ST. LOUIS - A former trucker whose documentary chronicled an agonizing descent as methamphetamine ravaged his body has died, optimistic to the end that his story would keep others from the highly addictive stimulant.

“He was extremely satisfied, wanting to do more in getting the word out and showing kids what meth harm does. We didn’t get to that point,” his father, Jack Bridges, said shortly after the 35-year-old died Monday at a hospital in Cape Girardeau.

This album is tons better than Okemah, top to bottom. Even the whiney,
strained songs are good.

Agreed. Okemah had a few very good songs (Bandages and Scars, Gramaphone, etc) but this is a better record.

Don't forget Atmosphere.

I was the knucklehead that said something to the effect that Meth was the greatest anti-drug song ever...hate to hear it said that way..best ever...but was hoping some might disagree and say Needle NY 's better because or offer other alternatives...

I can't say that you are full of shit. Meth is very powerful song, especially if you know people who have had their lives wrecked as a result of that or any other substance. Needle is a masterpiece though. I am trying to think of some others. I guess Wish You Were Here could be put into that category.
