John Hardy because He had that punk element I like so much. I miss that element. He hasn't rocked out in a long time. I love all of his stuff, but those early country/punk hybrids were pure genious.

i too think Joe Citizen is a brilliant song.

imho Jay could be speaking in tongues singing it and it would still conjure emotion.

although the lyrics really do effect me.

"And the world spins around, head bowed down, one thousand seventy miles an hour"

the song always makes me think of how fast life goes by...and getting motivated to do something meaningful with the short time we have.

"Route" does the exact same thing to me.

"Its now or never, too close to the latter"

Another song with little interpretation needed. Kind of the same "nyah, nyah, nyah. na-na-nyah" schoolyard - taunt vibe as Jet Pilot. For me, anyhow.
Interesting. I don't care for Jet Pilot but really like Joe Citizen Blues. Dang we're a diverse group.
"That's what I like about what I do... I'm able to come up with these songs, and people always come up to me, and tell me what it means to them, and sometimes it blows me away... what they says it means to them. Often it's better than what I had in mind."
-Jay Farrar 7/20/05
"Outlaw Country" radio interview

That's one of the things I love about Jay's music... he's such a great songwriter obviously, but so many of his songs are left open to intrepretation. I lost count of how many times I've been uplifted by Jay.

I bought ThirdShiftGrottoSlack when my marriage was starting to fall apart. "It's not the end of the world... can't even see it from here."

Terroir when the legal bullshit started. "You've been pushed before... push back with all of your might."

C'mon.

How many of Jay's albums do you associate with tough times, or difficult phases of your life?

I guess I can't really take ownership of Jet Pilot, Joe Citizen, or some of the more recent work. I don't hate George Bush.

My $0.02
My Dad died about a year before Jays did. I loved him more than I can possibly put into words. I associate several of the songs on Terroir Blues with the memory of my Dad. I know Jay wrote most of the songs at the time of his Dad's death. Other than his death my life has been pretty good so I really can't associate many of his songs with bad times in my life. But I do understand what you're saying. I can't make it through Hanging On To You without tearing up...

I've seen them perform Joe Citizen live twice. I would have liked to have heard a studio version on an album just to compare the live version to.
