So there is no such thing as good or bad music? Just different? What a wishy-washy way to think. I suppose you "think" the same about good and evil. Maybe to Hitler killing the Jews was good, so we shouldn't harrass him too about it. After all, he is entitled to believe anything he likes. His opinion is as good as mine or yours. If you relativists are afraid to take a stand on something as silly as music, I fear for your generation.
An "experienced and discriminating and intelligent music critic"? What the hell is that. 99% of the critics I read reviews from are full of shit. How the hell is the critics opinion more important than the fan on the front row rocking out? It's not. Everyone has an opinion, music is a personal thing that effects everyone different. It is not a definite black and white issue. Miles = Good, Bay City Rollers = Bad. That is ridiculous.I Am Who Am wrote:..."But it is all subjective, what some consider a piece of shit, others may consider a masterpiece. It is opinion and feeling and taste."
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The opinion of an experienced and discriminating and intelligent music critic is worth more than the opinion of an idiot. Some music is genius or masterful by any reasonable standard. If some idiot says Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is a piece of shit, I am supposed to say, okay, You're opinion is completely valid because that is your dumb ass opinion? Give me a break.
Trace is nearly a masterpiece and Terrior Blues blows, by an intelligent man's criteria.
If someone says Miles is crap, he is crap to that person. How on earth can you look at it the way you do? That is sad man. Just because someone says something you like is a piece of shit (or a masterpiece) TO THEM doesn't mean it has to be a piece of shit (or a masterpiece) TO YOU.
I am not an "experienced and discriminating and intelligent music critic" but I am as big a fan of great music as you will ever meet, and I will tell you than many, most, of the songs on Terroir Blues are on par with anything that Farrar has ever done.
I feel stupid even writing this response, because your intitial comments were just so whacky.
I Am Who Am.... thats just plain horrible. There are no definite lines in music, no ultimatums. Nothing is "worth" anything. To impose something that strict on music makes me... uncomfortable. If someone says Kind of Blue is a piece of shit, its a piece of shit to that person. Just like I'll tell you that I fucking love Terroir Blues. And that's coming from an idiot.
Now I, sadly, don't know what an "intelligent man" would say. Maybe someday....

Let me guess, you're the intelligent man?I Am Who Am wrote:Trace is nearly a masterpiece and Terrior Blues blows, by an intelligent man's criteria.
I'm guessing you think it blows because it doesn't have the same three chord catchiness of windfall, drown and tear-stained eye. Get some depth, Jackass.

As far as Terroir Blues goes, I think it's a great album. Granted I think all of the space junk shit is shit, but the songs are very strong. Hard is the Fall, No Rolling Back, California, and Heart On the Ground are some of Jay's best tunes. I don't know why people bitch about that album. Band, no band, Jay knows what the fuck he's doing and should be free to explore whatever musical territory he chooses to. Bring on the new Son Volt.
Some of you guys are so fucking negative...

This is by far the biggest news to hit the board in quite awhile!! Great news, can't wait for some great new music from Son Volt!!!
This will be Son Volt not another solo album because it will be made in the context of a band environment, that band being SON VOLT. Yes, the original members for whatever reason are not available, but it will be SON VOLT.
Everyone has different tastes and different opinions on music, some people didn't get Terroir Blues, and that is fine. But it is all subjective, what some consider a piece of shit, others may consider a masterpiece. It is opinion and feeling and taste.
I am just glad that Jay Farrar is making music. There are very few artists out there this DAMN GOOD. From what I have read in interviews, he makes music cause he loves making music, and that is the best reason of all. As long as he keeps it up, I will be happy.

This is the biggest news to hit this board maybe ever. Enough of you wanna-be administrators getting on people for starting new threads. If you don't want to read them, then don't.clarkma5 wrote:Congratulations! You are now the nth person to post up a thread that is identical to the (n-1)th that came before it.
What??? Horseshit!!
I haven't posted on here, but have kept up with all the news and postings. Just in case anyone who cares reads this:
Why doesn't Jay just call this another solo album?
Really, what's the fucking difference. This is horseshit. For everyone who "trusts" Jay's musical decisions, I think some honesty is in order with regards to Terroir Blues. It is, for the most part, pretty bad. Dent County and No Rolling Back are good songs, but the rest is pretty spare and lacking. Even the good stuff on the record is undramatic and he fills space with alternate takes and half-baked songs. I know this is simply my opinion, but I think most people would agree that it was a definitive step towards shit. The live disc is crap, also. The quality is shit (the acoustic guitars are painfully recorded and the rest sounds thrown together) and the dvd is boring. In my opinion, it seems like Jay just doesn't give a damn anymore. He should do as he pleases, but so should we. That's why I had to say something. I'm sick of the for-hire bullshit and Jay Farrar alone is not Son Volt, Son Volt is Son Volt. Just my opinion. I know he doesn't read this, so I thought I'd say so.
