RECORD REVIEW

June 2003

The man who taught Jeff Tweedy how to write a decent song while together in Uncle Tupelo finally returns with solo record number 2. While 'Sebastopol' was his attempt at Bob Dylan's "Self Portrait" (i.e. alienating all his fans who jumped on board because of the alt.country bandwagon), this time around he's gone back to the Son Volt sound of old - or perhaps Son Volt's version of the high and lonesome blues. His voice still sounds like what I imagine God's would (think Johnny Cash with a drawl) and on some songs here ('Heart On the Ground' especially) he sounds EXACTLY like God should. I won't go on because I love the man too much and gushing doesn't help anyone, but rest assured I'm right!
