How many boardsters are heading off to see the band at the Kilkenny Rythmn and Roots festival at the end of the month?
I am going myself but can only attend the Friday night show, unless I can scam some tickets and somewhere to sleep the next night. That wouldn't be a problem but getting a lift back to Cork would be as my mate/driver can only stay for Fri night.
It is usually a good weekend with plenty of great music in the pubs and stuff. _________________

I'll be there the whole weekend like last year ( Jay, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Richmond Fontaine, Creekdippers).
This year's line-up doesn't grab me quite as much, but Jay with a by all
accounts kick-ass band will do me just fine ta very much.
Hopefully someone I've never heard will burrow their way into my affections: that's the beauty and surprise of these get togethers oftentimes.
So, Calexico, if you spot a tall skinny black-haired Scotsman at next Friday's Son Volt shindig, I'm buying. _________________ Sounds like 1963 |

I will be there for the Fri night myself. This years line up is a little weak but The Czars are there too, they are pretty good.
Last year was a doozy by all accounts....I was out of the fucking country...for like once in my lifetime!!!Bastards!
Oh I will be the fat guy with glasses and most probably a Green Lantern tshirt....yea I know!! _________________

I'll be there for the full weekend.
Agree with calexico that this year's line-up appears weaker than many previous years. But full credit to Tom Stapleton (promoter) for securing 2 SV shows. |

Two blistering shows from the Volt in Kilkenny.
Setlist the same as other dates on this European tour but we did get a 9 min encore of 'Cortez The Killer' on Saturday night. |

This is word for word the same review I posted somewhere else but I am a lazy bugger!
So I am just back in some sort of normality
after 2 days of debauchery in Kilkenny at the Rythmn
and Roots Festival. This year I could only
make 2 nights instead of the whole lot but we fit in
a fair bit in those 2 days.
Friday and Saturday nights we went to see
the new Son Volt line up and man did they
rock. Two great shows with the last night just shading it for me.
Jay was in fine voice and the band are tight and rocking
Some great new songs previewed here including one called
Atmosphere which is tremendous.
Both nights had stellar versions of Medication which turned into
some acid hazed guitar orgy and just knocked the crowd
for a loop.
I was shouting my brains out at Six String Belief which had a woman
ahead of me turning around and smiling at my poor efforts.
All the favourites turned up Loose,Route Tear Stained Eye
Windfall,Driving The View...excellent versions of Joe Citizen
both nights. The band alternately rocked and soothed a nicely packed room both nights.
About 200 people give or take each night and a full bar
too,which I fully indulged in!!
The highlight without doubt was the encore the second night. The first night encore was a track by R.L. Burnside which I didn't know
and left the crowd slightly disappointed I felt.
The second night was transcendent though.A fully 10 minute version of Neil Young's Cortez The Killer....I haven't heard even Neil kill this song this well in years.
Even the guy who did support,Joe Whyte, was open mouthed
after they band wrapped it up.The place was electric
after the last note fell and Jay just said thanks and was gone.Best encore I ever heard,no doubt.
As for the rest of the weekend,we saw a couple other good bands. The aforementioned Joe Whyte, well worth checking out...
nice Josh Ritter vibe he has going.A great Dylan
covers band to whom I proceeded to get blasted to!!And an 8 piece bluegrass outfit from Dublin of all places!!
But they totally ripped up the place we saw them play
and that was at 4 in the afternoon.Ace Of Spades bluegrass style anyone?!?
All in all a great weekend and highly recommended to anyone who happens to be in the area next year.
Oh and just to show what a dork I was...
I was on the phone to someone telling them how the gig went
on Friday night and Jay Farrar passes me in the street! So I said
to the person I was talking to 'Wow there's Jay Farrar!" and he turned around and gave a little wave and carried on with his shopping! _________________

Calexico, thanks again. Sounds like an awesome weekend. I'd like to pass Jay in the street too while talking about him on the phone _________________ I'm not home but these are the Daves I know |

I love this part Cale:
Both nights has stellar versions of Medication which turned into
some acid hazed guitar orgy and just knocked the crowd
for a loop.
I've really dug Medication on the bootlegs and your review makes me wanna hear it right now.
Let's hope for bootlegs turning up from these shows _________________ I'm not home but these are the Daves I know |
