Is it me or is Heart on the Ground the ultimate anti-shrink/therapy/psychanalysis song ever written. I take it as being a song that says in a nut-shell, hey, life is tough, bad shit happens to good people, keep fighting the fight and don't cry over spilt milk. "You don't have to twist the knife" is like a repetitive voice from above saying that its going to be okay. Don't make your pain worse by sweating the people, places or things that may have betrayed and hurt you in the past. "Picking through bones that way..." to me means is it worth the pain by rekiddling old, painful memories to have a doctor really make you better? Maybe, and I really don't know. "Fresh made fields..." leads to the question is it worth the money and tears it takes to have some stranger you talk to an hour or so a week heal you by refueling their old bruises and pains. Maybe it is, I really don't know. "Heads buried in the sand...." to me is like saying relying on someone else to heal you would be basically ignoring the future and the pursuit of self-improvement and happiness. But maybe it is the only thing to make some people feel better in this world. Again I don't know. But you can hear that voice again, over and over....."You don't have to twist the knife....". The phrase is powerful from the first haunting chorus to the second realistic chorus to assuring and charged up final chorus. And on Heart on the Ground I, they really rock out for that final chorus. But whats funny is I didn't think that song was as excellent as some of my other favorites on TB when I first heard it, and now I think it might be the best. How about the Wipe the Clock reference?
Fresh made fields, fresh time on the clock better still
With a clean cloth to wipe it away
I always wondered who Jay wrote Wipe the Clock about. That is the only song I can recall in which he "slams" someone personally. Whoever it was about was not on Jay's favorite person list at the time.
I think fresh time on the clock references an abrupt change in a person's attitude, persona, outlook, etc. Maybe Jay meant it in a more positive way this time around.
I agree, great song, possibly the best on TB. _________________ Ain't it hard when the spirit doesn't catch you |

Good question. But to me that line (Fresh made fields)...refers to the process of touching on certain elements a person may have been keeping tucked away on the inside, and having things to talk about or piece together in the next painful yet necessary "healing process". (Fresh time on the clock better still)... to me is like saying "we can pick it up there next week and I get to bill you for it" (And a clean cloth to wipe it away)... I think is the obligatory tissue you will get when the tears really start flowing. But maybe I'm way off the mark here and I'm just plain crazy? _________________ sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile... |

| You kids need fresh air. Farrar should write more direct lyrics, if only to discourage such discussion. |

Based on some of your earlier posts, I'm sure that Jay doesn't need any advise from you on his songwriting techniques. _________________ sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile... |

| More important advice was mine to you re: fresh air. Advice. With a "c." Advise is a verb. Here is some advice. I advise you to stop descrambling Farrar's pot-inspired doubletalk and get some goddamn poozle. |

With a name like momo I'm sure you've made a mistake or two in your life so ease up Webster's. And I have never even heard the word poozle before so I would adviSe you to leave a definition. _________________ sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile... |
