It sounds like heaven. That's all I think about as I spin 'American Central Dust'. What a gorgeous record... This one should reach out and suck those of you back in that may have become mildly lost in all of Jay's recent experimentation. Songs like 'Dynamite,' 'Roll On,' 'No Turning Back,' 'Pushed Too Far,' and -- most beautifully -- 'Dust of Daylight' show that Jay still has "it" -- that which so powerfully moved us over a decade ago -- the same smoky, clinch-throated midwestern twang and depth in voice, the arresting existential poetry, the sweeping soundscapes of slow fiddle and sonic walls of whining pedal steel. Meanwhile, the high-pitched harmony in the chorus of 'Cocaine and Ashes' recalls the timeless quality of a song like 'She's More to be Pitied,' while lyrically placing a gravely modern spin on a similar subject matter. I truly cannot say enough for this record...
There are songs that would feel at home on everything Jay has done since forming Son Volt, but most of all, it evokes the best of the three records that came out Jay's work with the Boquists and Mike Heidorn -- only now with the welcome freshness that Duplantis, Bryson, Masterson, and Spencer bring to the table.
If you're waiting until July 7 to hear it, you're stronger than I proved to be, and you're in for a delightful treat.
Tim, once in the ATL, now officially in Chapel Hill
PS/Btw -- I am working on the guitar chords and tablature for several of these songs and will post them here individually as I complete them. 'Dust of Daylight' should be up shortly. _________________ "Too busy to hate is what they always say / But Bankhead to Buckhead's a long way / In one kids fill the bars, in the other they're locked behind them / And Lord it's a crying shame" |

Tim, nice post!
You hit the nail on the head.
Jay should use your review as a promo for their press kit.

congrats on a nice post(review). something the others can respond to. however, we endeavor to embrace the sometimes now. we consider, we reconfigure, we decide what is right. as we assemble, we tend to resemble, what we were taught from an early age. and, then grow older and the undesions continue to smolder. do not tell us what is good; we have killed the snake in the garden. _________________ Happiness is a byproduct of function, purpose, and conflict; those who seek happiness for itself seek victory without war |
