Adds Tweedy, "It's really our best record yet."
Thats never a good sign... Michael Stipe said that about REM's Around the Sun. |
Which is funny, because I love Around the Sun. My favorite REM album post-Berry. |

Well, Uncle Tupelo and Dinosaur Jr were two great influencial bands (in my eyes) with the same problem: one member with natural raw talent (J Mascis & Jay Farrar) and a struggling (and sometimes whiny) sidekick (Lou Barlow and Jeff Tweedy) who became more than just a side player in the band and acheive success and musical independence on their own.
When both bands began, Mascis and Farrar were the key players in the band and the sole driving force behind the music. As the bands progressed, the talent of the side players increased and tensions arose. Uncle Tupelo played the part more admirably than Dinosaur Jr. by finishing their last tour and making 4 great records while Dinosaur Jr really started forming into the J Mascis Experience after the original line up disbanded.
On Lou Barlow's website, in an interview by IFC, Lou talks about how J hated him when they were growing up. Sebadoh's "Freed Pig" is a direct attack on J.
In Gregory Knot's book about Wilco, Learning How to Die, Farrar is portrayed equally as an egatistical jerk who, at the end of Uncle Tupelo, refused to sing back up on Tweedy's songs and ended Uncle Tupelo with a nod.
Personally, both Farrar and Mascis have remained true to their original band's sound while Tweedy and Barlow have progressed into a new sound. I respect have have paid thousands on both bands with CDs, concerts, T-Shirts, and bootlegs and will always continue to do so. However, personally, I prefer the original sound.
Many bands have had collsions with having too much talent in the band (Lennon-McCartney) and other bands have had a single genius who went off the deep end (Brian Wilson) and did not have anyone to counter-balance him.
In 2005, Dinosaur Jr's original line-up reassembled, toured, and released a new album with another one in the works. Lou and Murph are into it, while Mascis is going throught the motions. I recently had the opportunity to meet Lou and Murph outside the venue they were performing waiting in line for dinner. J was no where to be seen. During the show, Lou joked with the crowd and jammed with Murph obviously they were into it. J looked bored and said nothing throughout the show.
Will Uncle Tupelo get together when they run out of money? I think so! |
This is a great comparison. I did want to mention though...J NEVER looks excited about ANYTHING. I've seen him solo, with the Fog and each time, dude looks like he could fall asleep at any moment. I had a close friend growing up, the most exciting moments were met with droopy eyes, etc.
Jay handled things more classy than J did. J told Lou they were breaking up while he brought in a new bassist and prepared for a European tour. He also refused all of Barlow's submissions to Bug and in a twist that I'm sure wasn't coincidence, made Lou since "Don't"...That'd be like Jay putting Drown on Anodyne and making Jeff since it.
Lou and Jeff are both cool to meet and talk to, but I take them both as whiny and always trying to make themselves out to be the center of attention. Aura is as important as talent is. They both have great moments, but honestly, I always thought Sebadoh got boring when Eric Gaffney left. He wrote some of the most catchy songs around.
Wilco is the same since Jay Bennett left. It's gotten pretty boring. A Ghost is Born has its moments. Company in my Back and Handshake Drugs are two of Tweedy's finest songs, but most of the album is pretty mediocre. Sky Blue Sky was good for me at first, but now it's unlistenable. It's rare an album gets worse for me.
So, I'm saying Lou and Jeff aren't as good without Eric and Jay B.
Also, I am willing to say the Uncle Tupelo rift won't ever be fixed for a reunion. They did the reissues and retrospective without dealing with one another...it won't happen. Remember, it was a Deep Wound show that got J and Lou talking...No such luck for Jay and Jeff. _________________ Bringing politics to music message boards since 2001. |

We need a resident expert to weigh in! <deleted when I found that Bill Carson and I agree in principal about downloading>
The money goes to The Woody Guthrie Foundation (or whatever it's called). _________________ Tell Veronica the secrets of the boy you never kissed

A short interview with Jeff Tweedy from last Thursday's Marketplace on NPR. He discusses why Wilco recorded 'Jolly Banker' and Woody Guthrie.

Bought Ashes of American Flags yesterday, really like it. The footage is shot in some real cool venues and the song selection is solid . Nels Cline is a incredible musician. _________________ If I go insane, please don't put

Man I hate to say it, but this album just isnt doing it for me...In fact I quit listening after the sixth or so song... I had a bad feeling about this album...Just didnt feel like they had the time to put together a solid effort after all the touring they have done...Sounds over-produced...No great melodies (at least thru the first six songs)...No stellar guitar work...Nels Cline has become redundant imho...I will wait for the offiical release date before I give this one another listen. But I have never had this negative of a first impression of any Wilco album to date. _________________ All the crutches you kept around now are nowhere to be found |
