The grifter and I talked about this subject after the amazing Knoxville wilco show last Saturday. It seemed to us that as, jspill was saying, the 2 bands are too different as to be compared. Contrasted, yes. Compared, no. We also decided that most Tweedy/Farrar people fit into one of 3 categories. 1) People that basically prefer, for lack of a better term, alt-country, to all other genres. These folks tend to love all things Jay and rightly so. They tend to not like Tweedy post Being There, if at all. It just isn't their type of music. They are most likely to get irate when Wilco/Tweedy are beatified because they see Jay as a critically and popularly disrespected genius. Again, rightly so from that perspective.
2) Folks that basically were exposed to Wilco post-Being There, mostly post-Summerteeth. These folks prefer, for lack of a better term, indie or college rock, to all other genres. They tend to see Wilco as 'important' and innovative and rightly so from their perspective. They tend to see Son Volt as making the same album over and over. Therefore they see Wilco as superior and think that it is laughable to prefer the Volt.
And 3) People that don't have a genre that they hold above all others. They may have been exposed to Jay/Jeff at any point along the discography. They recognized the genius in both of them and explored back catalogues and/or follow(ed) their respective careers. These folks see them both as equally important to music. They dig them both.
In short, it comes down to musical tastes. Everyone has a valid opinion in context. No matter which of the 3 groups you fall into, let's all agree to GIVE IT A REST ALREADY!!
Thank you. |
HA! I'm 0 for 3.
And I will never rest until the Evil Incarnate that is Jeff Tweedy has been iradicated from the universe. |

[ the Evil Incarnate that is Jeff Tweedy has been iradicated from the universe. [/quote]
i.e what happened with teh Bennett.
The problem with JT is that he began to believe he was "important" as his worshipers believe and thus, he eradicated everyone that made his music interesting and unique but who also challenged his artistic bent. This latest version of SV is proof that the sum of a few gifted individuals can flavor the music more than just the creative individual. This of course is not always the case. I love JF and his solo efforts, but in reality the best of that music could have been placed on one disc. The tension between opposites can produce beautiful things and once the tension is relieved via departure or exile, the beautiful and unique make way for the easy and boring. In other words, I slept through AGIB and OATMOR and would be hard pressed to differentiate SBS from anything I might hear on a Volkswagon commercial.
Bring back teh Bennett (Nels is gifted, but after five minutes, it's like listening to YingYang Malmsteen (sp?)) Bring back UT - let the fighting, name calling and great music begin. _________________ If you knew me you'd love me, so get out of my face. |

Now you're talking! But that wasn't the criteria I had in mind. |

i got a little carried away on my first post. let me say for the record i really do like wilco. i just don't listen to a ghost is born or sky blue sky that much.
everyone lately has taken the road that we should not be comparing the two anymore and i agree to a point. when someone joins the board and with there first post acts like a cock monkey i believe he should be treated as such.
sorry to the level headed wilco lovers and non comparers.
maybe i will get drunk tonight and rant some more. _________________ The wayside heals all thats wrong.... |

Jay Bennet(who is no longer in the band unfortunately) has and had more creativity and pushed music farther that anyone in sun volt. I dont get why you like the same played out bs. Wilco is one of the best maybe the best american live bands now. They are masters in the studio. |

would you sign up on ViaChicago and say Jay taught Jeff everything but personality? You'd be a twat. Who cares.
They both thrived. Tweedy found commercial success with middle America and Jay found his calling on the backroads. Both have their passionate fans, often fans of both.
Now I think we've been had. _________________ I'm a sick clown

I bet anyone that loves Uncle Tupelo and midwest underdogs has a soft spot for both Tweedy and Farrar. and Brian.
I do and I am.
Some like it on top.
Some like to be on the bottom.
Some like it in teh bottom.
And sorry about the word "twat".
